Where is the US in all of this?

Kedikat -> RE: Airline tax will buy medicine for world's poor (6/3/2006 4:41:54 AM)

I an so torn on things like this.
We rightly want to improve the health and alleviate the suffering of the people in these lands. And it feels good to do these things of the moment. But the most pressing need in these places, and soon everywhere, is to balance the population to the lands ability to support it.
We bring western ideas of prosperity to places that can't support it, have corporations moving in to use the cheap labour. And it becomes a big cluster f$%^ of conflicting possibilities.
One organization trying to cure diseases, another preaching, be fruitfull and multiply, another trying to feed the multitudes, and others preying on them in the freemarket global economy.
All of them from outside, bringing their concepts into a foreign reality, pounding square pegs into round holes. When a lot of the reasons the countries are messed up now, is the past meddling of foreign empires! Who's aid workers are now feebly trying to clear it up.
Too often we offer to help them become us, when that is the last thing they need. And ignore what they are actually asking for.
Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime. Set up a school and teach him western industrialized ideas, and he will be an identured slave for years, trying to earn enough to buy a wide screen TV.

You know what i think F--K the airline tax. Here in America pilots spend upwards of 60k dollars for certification to be a pilot only to make enough money as a pilot to qualify for welfare and food stamps. You want to  cut meat off a skeleton not gonna happen.   And why in the world would I buy AIDS medecine for "Worlds poor" , some poor shmucks in africa cure themselves of aids by having sex with virgin  children, and you want me to pay money for these people to survive?
There are poor and hungrt here in America I think ill start with them.

I agree that not every nation "needs" to look like a mirror image of the west, but thank goodness for the "western industrial" forces that have alleviated so much misery and poverty.

No I'm not in favor of it if the "UN"'s going to be involved in it!
They STILL can't find the *$22 Billion* that's "missing" from the Oil for Food program.
Also, the "UN" is not a government and doesn't have the right to tax anyone!
And why should people in Western countries be required to pay for people in other countries?
Those African countries need to start being responsible for their own people.
The West has poured in more than $100Billion through the "UN" into Africa over the past 40 years.
When is enough enough?
As long as these countries think that "the West will do it (for) us" there is no impetus for them to get off of their asses and help themselves.
Not to mention that most of that money would be stolen anyway.
Want to know where most "Foreign Aid" money ends up? Get a list of property "owners" on the French Riviera and other wealthy areas and a list of Mercedes Benz and BMW owners!
And a list of the Lobbyists on "K" street in Washington.
THAT'S where (YOUR) tax money ends up!

popeye-
you left out the war lords, shame on you

Seriously, helping people is all well and nice, but we have our own problems.  Charity is just that, charity, and it shouldn't be forced on people of one country to support those of another.  Especially when we have enough people here at home who can barely feed their families.  That and the fact regardless of how much we give it is never enough.  Leave charity to those who can afford it and wish to give it.  Spend tax dollars on what they should be spent on, things needed at home.

MstrTiger -> RE: Airline tax will buy medicine for world's poor (6/3/2006 10:55:35 AM)

A reverse example to display the bigotry shown by some people on this thread.

Starving people in the USA pfffff I could not care less about them if their corrupt money grabbing government cant look after them why should I care, the USA earns over
$100Billion per year, when will enough be enough to stop the population in their country keep off the poverty line, who cares about their suffering the world has too many people anyway let them all starve.

Personally I think anything that will alleviate suffering and poverty in any part of the world is a good thing though I dont think money should be raised directly through taxes.

Pavel -> RE: Airline tax will buy medicine for world's poor (6/3/2006 12:47:57 PM)

The amount of aid that goes in, verses the amount of aid that actually gets to the people is rather disturbing to put it mildly.  Also, I would imagine it'd be more economical to try to oh, I don't know, stop AIDs with education, and prevention, rather than treating the expanding number of people who have it.

Besides, I trust the UN only marginally more than, oh, wait no, I just don't trust the UN.  At all.

fullofgrace -> RE: Airline tax will buy medicine for world's poor (6/3/2006 1:20:51 PM)

people talk about "these countries."

i'm sorry, but the governments of "these countries" have nothing to do with the people. the people suffering, the people that aid organizations are trying to help, don't choose for their country to be the way it is. children who are raped and contract aids because of it don't choose to be raped.

aid programs are not perfect. but they are, at present, really all we have.

and as for why we should give money...well, because we're human. and i personally find it inhumane that people can just ignore it or say it's their fault their country sucks, or make excuses not to care. i mean, if you are below poverty level and struggling to support your own family, that's one thing. but if it means you drive a volkswagen instead of a mercedes or you just eat in one or two extra nights a week, that's not much to give up. the reason the world is the way it is is because of this idea of everyone for themselves. until that concept is less widespread, no matter what changes happen, things will always be like this.

as for the teach a man to fish...well, that's like "let them eat cake." what do you do when there are no fish? no jobs? no food?

edited to add: sorry to the op...i kind of digressed here, as i was responding more to some of the general ideas in the thread than the actual topic of funneling aid through the un.

edited again to add: for an idea of how money funneled through the un is used in treating illnesses and buying medicine, you might want to check out the book "mountains beyond mountains" by tracey kidder. if anyone's interested.

EdwardoBruceo -> RE: Airline tax will buy medicine for world's poor (6/3/2006 4:16:32 PM)

less pie eatin' and more money spendin' thats what i say.

popeye1250 -> RE: Airline tax will buy medicine for world's poor (6/3/2006 7:38:41 PM)

Tiger, it's got nothing to do with "bigotry", I'm just sick and tired of having my tax dollars being RIPPED-OFF.
I stood out in the hot sun for 4 hours with a collection can and raised about $450 for the Red Cross after the Tsunami so I don't mind giving money to help charities and I manage to give about $2,500 per year to charities and that being on a Disabled Veteran's pension.
The thing about different people and groups having all these grandiose ideas is that all their "plans" always seem to involve getting U.S. TAXPAYER DOLLARS.

UtopianRanger -> RE: Airline tax will buy medicine for world's poor (6/3/2006 10:25:14 PM)

Yanno Ms MacComb....

Love ya to death and like the hell out of your style, but I'm here to tell you that I'm sick as all hell of being over-taxed. The American people are getting shit on all the time with this little extra tax, that little extra tax - I'm sick of it.

Sure, someone else here will step up to the plate and say we are lucky because look how much the citizens in Canada or across the pond pay in taxes, etc, etc.  I don't care how much anyone else pays, I only care that we are paying way too much. And guess what? We're not getting much for what we are paying!!!!

Just think what would happen if all of sudden your power company , airlines, phone company, department stores, cell phone company, Cable company, oil companies,  your municipal water department,  the county assessor for your property taxes, building permits , parking fees , parks and recreation user fees etc, etc, all stopped collecting taxes and instead  they were additionally deducted as if they were payroll taxes.  How much would your payroll check shrink?  I think they'd have a full blown mutiny on their hands.

I think taxes should be paid as either one income tax or one sales tax, period.  Not both.

And as I said before, charity is great but it should be a personal choice, not something the goverment takes from you and gives away to another country.  The better part of which will never see the people it was intended for.

I agree. But to me its two different issues. One is the nimrods in DC who are porkbarrleing us to death, often for their own gain. They need to be made unemployed, but thats hard to do since half the US voting base are a bunch of fucking lames who wont even show up.  The other is a humanitarian issue. I guess my point is that we will be taxed/charged more regardless. One way it goes to the airline and oil companies CEOs, the other it would go to some people that actually need it. [:)]

popeye1250 -> RE: Airline tax will buy medicine for world's poor (6/3/2006 11:04:18 PM)

Ranger, I agree.
We really need to throw out a bunch of people in Washington in the next three elections!
ANY Senator who voted for that abomination that they don't want to call an "Amnesty" bill should be thrown out onto the street!I've read S-2611 and it is nothing but a giant give-away program for illegal aliens!
They get preferance over AMERICAN CITIZENS for jobs? They "only" have to pay 3 out of  5 years of back taxes with NO PENALTIES? They're getting it BETTER than American Citizens!
There's no way the House will pass this piece of crap!

Popeye....

I thoroughly agree. I wish they'd all catch a virulent strain of the Bird flu.

And then add to what you've just mentioned the fact that Halliburton is charging us a million dollars for a ''blue plastic tarp'' to cover freight on one of it's semi trucks, and it makes ya wonder why we should pay any taxes at all.
