It is up to the civilians to protect the soldiers.
To control the ones who send and command them.
To use them honourably.
Once we send them to war, they are only more of the victims of war.
Civilians need to fight against wars.
When soldiers finally have to go to war, they go into insanity.
The rules of war are not for those who go into battle.
But to protect those who send them.
Soldiers and civilians die for the failings of those who think they can govern. And those who elect them, or fail to fight against the unelected.
Attack the reasons for a war. If it gets to the battlefield, most of it is already lost. Except the profits.
