tazzygirl -> Rush.. his latest victim (3/7/2012 8:05:09 AM)

Less than a week after calling Sandra Fluke a "slut" on the air, Rush Limbaugh ran his mouth again on Tuesday, calling investigative journalist Tracie McMillan a "babe", an "authorette" and, more broadly, one of "these single white women." What makes the talk show host's poor choice of words even worse is that he was discussing McMillan's book, as he was trying to prove that the right wasn't waging a "war on women." From McMillan's point of view, this seemed an inopportune time to use diminutive terms in dismissing the in depth reporting and critically acclaimed work of a female author.

"It's been really interesting to have somebody be that openly dismissive of my work strictly based on the fact that I'm female," McMillan told The Atlantic Wire. "There's no other way to think about it except that Rush Limbaugh just doesn't think women count." McMillan went on to explain how her book approaches some difficult issues about the food that feeds America and the conditions for the workers that produce it, however Limbaugh didn't seem willing to engage in that debate. Instead, he focused on her being a woman. Check out this excerpt from Limbaugh's show, for example:

What is it with all of these young single white women, overeducated -- doesn't mean intelligent. For example, Tracie McMillan, the author of this book, seems to be just out of college and already she has been showered with awards, including the 2006 James Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism. … Her degree is not in food or nutrition. She has a B.A. from New York University in political science.

It's hard to comprehend exactly what Limbaugh is try to say. He suggests that McMillan is overeducated but not intelligent, naive and out of her league. McMillan isn't offended, necessarily. She seemed more concerned with the rhetoric Limbaugh's promoting. "Calling me out for being a single woman and suggesting that having put me through university on my own dime makes me an over educated person," she said, "that's pulling out some really bad tendencies in American thinking."

Meanwhile, yet another station has dropped Limbaugh from its roster, and all of the ads have been pulled. Regardless of his political beliefs, it would seem prudent of Rush to tone it down a little bit with the anti-women rhetoric. At least until this whole slut scandal blows over.

LaTigresse -> RE: Rush.. his latest victim (3/7/2012 8:56:47 AM)

In my eyes there is only one victim of Rush, himself.

Anyone that would give that stupid old showboating blow hard any relevance, is as big a moron as he is.

GrandPoobah -> RE: Rush.. his latest victim (3/7/2012 9:19:19 AM)

Rush simply doesn't see it. There is probably nothing that will "make him" see it. He lives in his own world, believes his own thoughts, and owns the rights to his fantasy theme park. He spews hatred, but claims status as "an entertainer" thus allowing himself a free ride. "Oh, I was just being funny" is his only, and ultimate, excuse. He's sorta like George Carlin or maybe Lenny Bruce, except not many people think he's that funny. For those of you who might not know these two names, here's a short clip from Carlin, defining today's problem...years ago.

The truly unfortunate part of all of this is that he's taking down the whole GOP with him. He claims to be the leader, speaking for the party. Since no one actually in the party leadership challenges that, it stands as true. The man with the most to lose, namely Mitt Romney, simply said "those weren't the words I would have used" in the latest explosion. That, in simple terms, was what Ben Bradley (of Watergate fame) called a "non-denial denial." If you stand up and claim to speak for a group, and no one in the group says otherwise, you get to do it. In some ways it's similar to the last dozen years with Islam. Bin Laden claimed to speak for the whole religion, and not very many Islamic leaders disagreed publicly. De facto, Islam became the religion of terrorists, even though most of us know that's probably not a fair generalization. If a bunch of leaders had decried the actions of 9-11, things might be much different. It's impossible to know, but that seems quite likely. Possibly they didn't speak up because they feared being the next target. I don't know, but that's also possible.

In any case, until somebody hits Rush with something big enough and hard enough, he's going to continue his private war against women and anyone else who challenges his point of view. He's making too much money to quit...and he's a firm believer in the hog-farm principle. It's the very reason he still has listeners.

Never wrestle with a pig in the mud. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.

Let's see. We have a conservative man who, although he attended college, did not graduate. So is it any surprise that he hates liberal educated women? Can anyone say chip on his shoulder?

I hope the female electorate is watching and listening. I know some here want to dismiss Limbaugh as some non-influential extremist - but I feel his views do represent those of a sizable number of conservatives out there. Women, conservatives really are not our friends....

No, it's not. He's been pilloried publicly and lost advertisers. And his "apology", preposterous as it was, was completely out of character for him. I assume that a lot of his listeners were feeling dejected that their hero had knuckled under.

The question is, when would he start being deliberately offensive and provocative again and try to woo them back? Didn't take long. If the Dems have any sense (doubtful), they'll double down on the hue and cry and use this second attack as proof the guy's been way overdue to get booted off legitimate media.

When was it he did that then?

My armchair psychoanalysis of Rush is that he's
scared shitless of women especially uppity ones
who know how to read. His audience is made up
largely of older white males who can't accept
that the universe of Mad Men is no more.
I believe Rush has issues about education to.
His dad and brother as I recall were both lawyers
while Rush struggled academically and hated
school. As disgusting as I find him it's hard
not to have some pity for him. He gives every
impression of being a self loathing terrified
of intimacy, insecure guy with the classic
tendencies towards obesity and numbing
narcotics. His verbal tic about being made
to bend over and grab your ankles is
interesting and perhaps self revealing.
But as long as there are scared resentful
white men he's got a audience.

This is a general reply...

All this suddenly made me think of the controversy that surrounded The Dixie Chicks after they criticized President Bush back in 2003.

It nearly ended their career, they had death threats - it was hugely impactful.

And it produced one of their best songs ever:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pojL_35QlSI&ob=av2e

Given the tenor of attack on women in much of the rhetoric, the song seems to me to be suddenly quite relevant again.

Actually (as you say) quite a lot did. It was less that no Islamists claimed bin Liner was nothing to do them, and more that those who did disclaim got little or no attention in a mass media that was busy hysterically scaremongering.

The main difference is that the Dixie Chicks (I think I mentioned Nathalie Gaines earlier in the thread) didn't actually say anything wrong or objectionable. It was clear channel that tried to destroy their career over it, though, you're right.
