Make him famous, then make him pay.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/mar/08/joseph-kony-social-media-tv?newsfeed=true

A half-hour documentary on a Ugandan rebel leader that has been watched by tens of millions online has been broadcast in full on Australian television.

The film's subject is Joseph Kony, leader of Ugandan rebel group the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). It was posted online by the US-based group Invisible Children, which aimed to use the power of social media to make him "famous" and, by doing so, raise his profile enough so world powers such as the United States were motivated to intervene and help capture him.

The film has been viewed more than 26m times since being uploaded to YouTube on Monday. It has almost 12m views on Vimeo, where it was first posted in February.

In Australia Kony 2012 quickly moved from social media to mainstream TV with an hour-long special on the national television network, Ten, on Thursday evening. The commercial network broadcast the half-hour film uninterrupted, saying it had responded to tweets and the "Kony-fication of our Facebook page".

Kony stands accused of appalling crimes, including the kidnap, torture and rape of children. The LRA began its campaign of terror in northern Uganda more than 20 years ago, originally in what it called a fight for a biblical state and the rights of the Acholi people. Since then Kony has been indicted for crimes against humanity at the international criminal court.

The film's narrator is Invisible Children's Jason Russell. He visited Uganda nearly 10 years ago and met a boy who feared for his life because of Kony. Russell promised the boy he would help stop the LRA and Kony 2012 is part of that campaign.

Russell says Kony is the "most wanted man in the world according to the international criminal court", and his documentary aims to put the name into every household's conversation.

Through lobbying cultural and political leaders in the United States, Invisible Children wants to pressure the White House to continue its assistance to the Ugandan army in capturing Kony. Last year the US sent 100 military advisers to Uganda.

"If the government doesn't know people care, they will not keep them there," Russell says in the film. "They will only know if Kony's name is everywhere."

The film has been criticised in some quarters as promoting neo-colonialism by trying to get outside powers, primarily the US, to intervene to capture Kony. Others have said Kony is no longer believed to be operating in Uganda and, by some accounts, has not been for six years and his LRA is down to just a few hundred men.

There has also been criticism from some parts of the charity sector about how Invisible Children spends its money.

Didn't Rush support this guy?

pyroaquatic -> RE: Stop Kony 2012 (3/8/2012 9:38:34 AM)

I have a prepared statement on this, edited of course:

Sickness is everywhere.

"They always fill me with a certain horror. It is my belief, Watson, founded upon my experience, that the lowest and vilest alleys in London do not present a more dreadful record of sin than does the smiling and beautiful countryside."
"You horrify me!"
"But the reason is very obvious. The pressure of public opinion can do in the town what the law cannot accomplish. There is no lane so vile that the scream of a tortured child, or the thud of a drunkard's blow, does not beget sympathy and indignation among the neighbours, and then the whole machinery of justice is ever so close that a word of complaint can set it going, and there is but a step between the crime and the dock. But look at these lonely houses, each in its own fields, filled for the most part with poor ignorant folk who know little of the law. Think of the deeds of hellish cruelty, the hidden wickedness which may go on, year in, year out, in such places, and none the wiser."

-Sherlock Holmes... or respectively Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Personally I am shocked that these chain of events have been going on for years and I have had zero clue of this. I know more of the Gang Violence that has been going on for years in LA and New York, the Cartels in Columbia and the rest of South America than I had about the events in Uganda.

I feel passionate for All Children and adults who do not have the resources for education and the basic necessities. Not to mention creating a safe and nurturing environment for healthy growth to offset a sick protocol:

Consume, Serve, Obey

The purpose of the video is to not only garner awareness but cultivate a sense of ability; We can do something.

It begins by targeting the very top of the list of some incredibly Egocentric and toxic adults which use Western techniques, Western weapons, and Western religions to abuse children horrifically.

If we cannot solve such a grossly horrific issue utilizing a few resources then there is no way we can solve a huge underlying issue globally. We share the same gravitational pull, utilize the same atmosphere. At one time we shared Plasma and space dusts. Why are these things separate now that we have sentience?

I do not support or detract from Invisible Children, Inc. More or less, I am upset that it takes 20 Cultural Icons and 20 Policy makers who have more value to the 'American Dream' than the potentiality of children globally.

Isaac Asimov: 'The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom.',

We can do better, we can be wiser. It takes many eyes and many hands and we need to be like a Sentient Amoebic Hydra. Squashed, we replicate. Cut, we grow stronger. There is a conscious and we need to use it for the benefit of showing that we will not tolerate any behavior like this.

Those are my feelings on this issue.

Awareness is part of the major key for transformative consciousness but it is only part of the formulae. The next parts are the proper allocation of resources to generate sources sustainably and enculturing an appropriate paradigm that removes the need for aggressive competition, useless power struggles, and the cessation of a dualistic mono-culturism of:

'You are Wrong, I am Right... disagree and eat some lead because I have Material and Mechanical Leverage.'

This does not happen in just Uganda; it happens everywhere. In public schools because of bullying... on the streets due to unjust ignorance.

Everyone should oppose Kony and the LRA.

However the Kony 2012 charity, Invisible Children, is suspect at best.

GreedyTop -> RE: Stop Kony 2012 (3/8/2012 10:54:51 AM)

Just out of curiosity, how much weight will the condemnation of people outside of Uganda actually carry? Will that weight actiually achieve anything to get this monster out?

Only if we pressure our governments to support Uganda in ending the LRA.

Soon as this fog clears it's letter writing time.

I believe Invisible Children has released a statement to address the criticism they've faced. You can find it here.

Personally, if people are still hesitant about supporting Invisible Children financially, they should lend their help in other ways with other charities trying to do similar things.
Awareness is important, taking action is the next step. There are many other organizations, including but not limited to religious groups, that can supply you with opportunities to reach out, here and overseas.

I'm intensely happy no one's called me naive yet, or making me feel stupid for caring. I've been made to feel stupid for caring before but and I think it's only made me wiser!

Side note: Jinger was right, CM is welcoming.

M says it's all of his facebook feeds. My mom, who is not a member of this forum or FB, lol, sent me this link to a NY Times piece. It's a well balanced article about the past and present situation in Uganda and the Invisible Children movement, but what struck me is the bit on slacktivism.

I didn't sleep well last night, and am apathetic to the IRL volunteer opportunities in my inbox this AM. Let's hope I can push away from the computer and support my causes in person.

Online, a Distant Conflict Soars to Topic No. 1

Some have called the video a pitch-perfect appeal to so-called slacktivism, a pejorative term for armchair activism by a younger generation, often online. But rather than eschew such digital action, the video takes it as one of its primary goals. Making Mr. Kony infamous, after all, is just a click away.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Stop Kony 2012 (3/9/2012 7:18:37 AM)

Obama sent a 100 US troops to Uganda to assist in combatting Kony. Obama has been roundly criticized for this by none other than RUSH LIMBAUGH, who accuses him of sending US troops to kill Christians.

And THAT is the "entertainment" these phonies want piped through to our troops?

I'd say tell Limbaugh to put his money where his big fat mouth is and spend some of that $400,000, 000 to go rescue children if they wouldn't be in more danger with him.

Nothing wrong with being compassionate!!! however many names you are called! its THEIR issue, not one with you. Welcome to the boards from another person who "cares too much" and LOVES it:)
