wandered across my mind as I read yet another "people are not honest on web". I don't doubt that is the case - people can be whomever they wish when there is no face to face and the fallacies can be difficult to detect.
Every day I play a game called "World of Warcraft" where I interact with pretty much the same 30 or so people day in day out. We talk over VoIP (basically like an international conference call, only free). Ive played this game for over a year and Ive found that when they need someone to talk to or what not, often the Americans will pull one of us Aussies into a private room and spill their guts about something in their real life that has been bothering them. Things they can't confess to the people close to them. They need to let it out, but are unable to do it those close to them for fear of rejection, hatred or whatever, and someone on the other side of the world is safe.
Prehaps this is what occurs when a person disappears, they have confessed, and now they feel ashamed, or are unable for one reason or another to take the next step. The person may not be a fake - but instead a very scared person, who finds avoidence easier than conflict.
But hey, I hope for the best in people, but expect the worst.
