Considering the kind of shit that commonly comes from this source, it's easy to be a little conflicted about Pat Robertson getting on board for marijuana legalization.

quote:

Of the many roles Pat Robertson has assumed over his five-decade-long career as an evangelical leader — including presidential candidate and provocative voice of the right wing — his newest guise may perhaps surprise his followers the most: marijuana legalization advocate.

“I really believe we should treat marijuana the way we treat beverage alcohol,” Mr. Robertson said in an interview on Wednesday. “I’ve never used marijuana and I don’t intend to, but it’s just one of those things that I think: this war on drugs just hasn’t succeeded.”

If he can get the little old Christian ladies talking at their luncheons, and at the senior center, I'll call it another step in the right direction.

Actually, he got in a pretty good shot at the liberals, DNAV.

He said part of the problem was a “liberal mindset to have an all-encompassing government.”

Good on him. While I don't agree that marijuana is a drug (it's a flowering plant) I agree with him that it should be treated the same way as alcohol and have no problem with seeing it become legal and taxed and all those people in jail for marijuana possession/dealing can be let out and become tax paying members of society instead of tax burdens.. well, if there were actually jobs out here for them.

Weird. That's Libertarian, to have few laws regulating personal activity. I suspect that his overall stance would be "outlaw it if the Bible spoke against it and legalize it otherwise." Either that or he's getting flaky in old age.

His justification of his pro-pot stance is actually reasoned out well. I'm impressed.

Or, possibly, he's come to realize that people have to be drunk, high, or in some way chemically altered to buy the shit he's selling?

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Of course there is a danger to the Right in this stance.
Let out all the pot "addicts," and "dealers," in California from the state prisons, and the state budget would just about be balanced.
And if California has a balanced budget, the Republicans wouldn't be able to point at it and say that liberals can't balance a budget (never mind that CA has a republican law that prevents raising taxes to cover spending...)

Collect the taxes on legal sales of marijuana, encourage manufacturing and industry with the rest of the plant, we might be able to meet the pension obligations to the prison guards.

Yep, they (the prison guards) were big supporters of the "three strikes, you're out" legislation.

I haveta admit, Pat was the last person I figured would associated with legalization. But I still ding him for the liberal crack, since he'd have no problem with government interference with a woman's uterus, or people trying to make decisions about folks in comas/vegetative states.

{Edit}FR::

Like so many other psychotrolling narcissopaths (some of them operate in much bigger ponds than kink-sites), when Paddy-boy sees too much decline in his social capital/status/leverage/etc, he concocts (or recycles) some 'new' mentally-twisted scheme to incite attention to himself. Oh, sure, he might have other more mundane motives too, and (as elsewhere) much of his sheeplick herds will fawn over his reversal as enlightened.ss

Blah. As much as I'd agree that the drug laws need radical changes, I've seen too much of Robertson's blather over the years to classify his latest as anything but cynical pragmatism.
