catcherintherye -> DO YOU LIKE SADE, OSCAR WILDE, BERTRAND RUSSELL? (3/10/2012 5:15:36 PM)

I'm seeking like-minded people with whom I can have discussions, get-togethers, etc.
Like "munches" with (more or less) specific topics.

If you wish to know where I'm "coming from" go, here: http://joeedwardmack.com
I live for contact, so don't be shy.

Oscar was good, De Sade was a twat, and Russell was a crashing bore. Hope that helps!

The website is rather... a disorganized blob of information without theme.
I haven't really delved into Sade or Wilde, but I do enjoy Russell. A man of mind for sure.

The website also mentions "The Virtue of Selfishness" by Rand, excellent.

I don't see how this is BDSM related, but I'd be interesting in pointed discussions of this sort. :)

Since Ayn Rand was mentioned I shall turn anyone's attention to her beautifully written "For the New Intellectual" or "Philosophy Who Needs It"
As far as Sade, Oscar Wilde, Or Bertrand Russell, I bear no opinion on them.

DesFIP -> RE: DO YOU LIKE SADE, OSCAR WILDE, BERTRAND RUSSELL? (3/10/2012 8:21:28 PM)

What Peon said. I haven't read Russell in over 40 years and have no desire to waste any more time on him. I wasted enough.

I thought the Op refers to Sade, that rather attractive singer best known in the 80's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TYv2PhG89A

And what in the hell does this have to do with BDSM?

Winterapple -> RE: DO YOU LIKE SADE, OSCAR WILDE, BERTRAND RUSSELL? (3/10/2012 8:38:13 PM)

FR
I like Sade the singer very much.
The Marquis de Sade not so much though
Camille Paglia pimps him mightily.
No real interest in Bertrand Russell though
he did say something interesting about
marriage. Can't pull the quote off the top
of my head. Robert Louis Stevensons quote
about marriage was pithier though.
I love Oscar Wilde, he's been one of my
heroes since I was a teenager and slept
with a picture of him on my nightstand.
I don't imagine he'd be thrilled to be lumped
in with de Sade, Russell or Ayn Rand
Just my thought on Oscar's possible thought
on such improbable companions.

I have no memory of anything Bertrand Russell wrote...and I am glad of it. Wilde = winning! French moralists fail for me, even deSade.

Hearing Wilde's last poem "The Ballad of Redding Goal" really impressed. There is an old recording of him saying some of it on an ancient wax cylinder in 1901, apparently the only existing recording of his voice. It was moving to hear it on a documentary I saw about him. There is a recording professing to be of him on Youtube too but that might be a fake.

I was told by someone that an article in a magazine of repute (can't recall the name) after Bertrand Russell's death stated that he had relations with the wife of one of his sons. If true thats a pretty appalling thing to do, especially for such an apparently principled moralist!

DeSade was (as everybody else has already said) a complete and utter bottom burp. If you have an interest in that, you'd be a lot better off with Angela Carter's The Sadeian Woman than any of his own arse dribble.

Edie BrickelL trumps them all.

"Philosophy is talk on a cereal box...
Religion is the smile on a dog...
Philosophy is a walk on a slippery rock...

Choke me in the shallow water before I get too deep...

What I am is what I am
You what you are or...what...?"

Bleah. About the only '80s pop singer who made Fairground Attraction sound worthwhile.

Well, I suppose everyone's entitled to their opinion. Except, of course, when they disagree with meeeeeeeeeeee !

Besides, I wasn't extolling her or the band's licks, simply agree with the point of view, see ? [8|]

She is married to Paul Simon. Who has very eclectic taste in women.

Paul and I have that in common. We both like the taste of eclectic women.

I'm afraid I've been a dirty man, young, middle aged, old, whatever, since I was 12. It's a long tradition in the family.
