I found this fascinating. It truly does illustrate how far backward the GOP's war on women would like to take us. From a time when doctors didn't like to treat women professionally and most female complaints were reduced to a diagnosis of "hysteria" to today where a woman who wants her insurance provider to cover birth control must be a "slut" and a "prostitute" and a certain radio talk show host attacks an author as being a "a young, white, single woman, over educated--doesn't mean intelligent."

Bill O'Reilly has certainly used as a missile against women.

But the specter of female masturbation was far more terrifying. I have read debates between doctors over whether women should be allowed to ride bicycles or whether the pleasure they might induce from the seat made it an unacceptable moral hazard.

Alex "Teh Joy Ov Sechs" Comfort's The Anxiety makers gives a really good account of this sort of ridiculous crap.

Amazing isn't it. This same mindset is why women also rode sidesaddle, when they learned to ride horses at all. Listening to Santorum and some of the other nitwit religious fundies scares the hell out of me about what kind of country we are going to become for my daughter and grand daughter. My daughter is the bread winner in her household, btw, while her husband completes his education.

FR

There is a failure by many to understand how far women have come, but how very easily, things could return to the way they were in the past. It was not so long ago that a lot of misconceptions existed about women.

I think it is easy for people to day to become complacent and have the attitude that all the major fights have been won, and women are "equal" and we don't need to worry about erosion of rights.

The contraception debate is just another in a long line of policies that have always been designed to keep "women in their place".

For me, "my place" is something that I determine for myself only. In my life professionally I have defined what my place is. In my private life, within the context of BDSM, this means I have to consent to a Dominant in order to take on the submissive role.

The notion that society, as a whole, can simply place all women in a secondary position, treat them as less important intellectually, dismiss their health concerns, and not hear their voice is so clearly wrong. Anyone in BDSM should be able to see that without consent, who has the right to do that to someone simply because of their gender? We speak here all the time about how consent matters, about respect for choices, and that only an individual can make a choice.

Well, I don't consent to what society is trying to do here. They don't have the right to do it. Women have to start standing up for their rights.

To any young woman who claims, "I'm not a feminist", I say, think again. The war against women will continue unless we, as a gender, continue to be vigilant.

As far as I can tell vibrators are still illegal in Alabama.

I would have spelt it spectre, but I woulda watched a girl beat off long before I knew what the word masturbation meant.  And would have got the gimmick, even if I didnt know the gimmick at the time.

Terrifying is the right adjective. So terrifying that, in order to save the world from the menace of female masturbation mania (to give it its correct medical diagnosis) clitordectomonies were carried out on young girls and women well into the 20th century. As an undergrad student, I remember stumbling across a report of such an operation being performed in 1915. It's unlikely that this particular occasion was the last time this 'cure' was performed.

Of course there was no equivalent surgery performed on those poor young boys and men deemed to suffering from 'masturbation mania' ........

Thanks boys. It has been truly edifying to learn all about your laundry habits. Even if we did have to wade through some muck to acquire such priceless enlightenment.

Sorry but I am beginning to tire of the way in which any thread vaguely related to womens sexuality is flooded with posts so trivial, childish and idiotic, sniggering 12 year old boys would be ashamed of them. By all means feel free to make a humourous contribution if you can. But if you can't make a serious or relevant contribution why are you wasting your own and everyone else's time?

ummmm... I am not a boy, I am a girl.. the post was about vibrators (which I as a girl have used) and there is more than one way to accomplish the goal.. does every friggin post/thread have to be dead serious & head butting? Cuz to me thats not what life is about.. I come here to enjoy myself.. in the way I want.. you are free to ignore my posts or threads that arent to your liking..

Guess it was a good thing i didnt mention what a car ride down a bumpy road does to me, huh??? [8|]

When health insurance covers condoms and men have a say in the life or death of unborn children, then i'll pay attention when people complain about this so-called "war on women". One man being an asshole on the radio does not a conspiracy make.

tj444 -> RE: History of vibrator and how it relates to today's war on women (3/11/2012 10:44:21 PM)

I think this war on women is mostly a US thing.. I am Canadian and I never noticed a war on women there.. the US is just weird.. about a lot of things..

men make a life and death decision about their unborn children every time they jerk off.. if you want to get all technical about it.. [;)]

Just a question, not meant to be any sort of attack, but aren't most lawmakers male? And aren't the most vigorous supporters of anti-abortion bills in the Senate and Congress male? If I'm mistaken, then do please feel free to cite sources where I may correct my misapprehensions.
