FR There is a failure by many to understand how far women have come, but how very easily, things could return to the way they were in the past. It was not so long ago that a lot of misconceptions existed about women. I think it is easy for people to day to become complacent and have the attitude that all the major fights have been won, and women are "equal" and we don't need to worry about erosion of rights. The contraception debate is just another in a long line of policies that have always been designed to keep "women in their place". For me, "my place" is something that I determine for myself only. In my life professionally I have defined what my place is. In my private life, within the context of BDSM, this means I have to consent to a Dominant in order to take on the submissive role. The notion that society, as a whole, can simply place all women in a secondary position, treat them as less important intellectually, dismiss their health concerns, and not hear their voice is so clearly wrong. Anyone in BDSM should be able to see that without consent, who has the right to do that to someone simply because of their gender? We speak here all the time about how consent matters, about respect for choices, and that only an individual can make a choice. Well, I don't consent to what society is trying to do here. They don't have the right to do it. Women have to start standing up for their rights. To any young woman who claims, "I'm not a feminist", I say, think again. The war against women will continue unless we, as a gender, continue to be vigilant.
