DarkSteven -> Limbaugh's other screwup (3/12/2012 5:00:23 AM)

He supported Kony's LRA.

It's pretty clear that he simply was opposing Obama's actions on principle, without bothering to actually read what was going on.

When he was told, in some cases forcefully, what he'd done, he issued a musing statement “Is that right? The Lord’s Resistance Army is being accused of really bad stuff? ... Well, we just found out about this today. We’re gonna do, of course, our due diligence research on it. But nevertheless we got a hundred troops being sent over there to fight these guys – and they claim to be Christians.” and then clammed up and moved on.

"The next day conservative Sen. James Inhofe (R) of Oklahoma went on the Senate floor to set the record straight, noting that Joseph Kony was in no way a Christian, and that he had been disavowed by the Ugandan Catholic Church.

“I stand behind the president in his decision ... Josephy Kony and the LRA are responsible for one of the longest, most violent, and costly conflicts ever on the continent of Africa,” Senator Inhofe said.

Even Stephen Colbert took after Limbaugh for his maladroit move. On his Oct. 19 Colbert Report, the comedian picked up on the talk show host’s “due diligence” comment, saying, “Of course due diligence always comes after accusing the president of killing Christians.”

Omnipotent Face to Omnipotent Palm.

this is how the universe was created...

I only recently did some digging on this.

While, usually, I am loathe to send our troops to too many places because I am sick of the empire building that we've been doing for the last 30-50 years, these don't sound like very good guys to me.

Now, while war is hell (and I believe it always should be so that it is something we are wanting to avoid) and sometimes, certain "courtesies" may get over-looked on the battlefield, I highly doubt, from the descriptions I've read, that the LRA is truly a bunch of good Christians, fighting the good fight.

That said, it invokes my desire that when we feel that we absolutely must engage in war, we should go in with a plan for unqualified victory. Go in, wipe out the enemy ... obliterate them or their ability to wage war, take your pick and get out so that the people of that country can go back to living their lives as they see fit. So, that begs the question: Why so few troops? Let's go in, git 'er done and get the hell out in time for Sunday dinner back home.

Our military operations of the last twenty (if not thirty) years could be summed up as: "There's injustice somewhere! This is our chance to colonize another spot on the globe (big plus if there's oil under the ground, there)!" Of that, I do not approve.

I understand that being the world's only remaining "super power" morally obligates us to helping in some squabbles but it doesn't obligate us to spread democracy to places that may not want it.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I remember when this happened a while back.......the extremists and Obama haters jumped right on it without looking first(I think rich was the only con here to defend the move).

But like every other horrible gross over the top thing fox&fiends have said about the president.....it back-fired and then it embarrassing became obvious that the cons were defending something akin to satan and not "Christians".

Now on kony.......

It was the right thing to do and tho this doesn`t cost us much,it will produce a huge amount of good will and good faith between the US and most every person/nation/group/org. with a conscience............on the planet.

I understand there is natural reluctance to sending our GIs into danger anywhere and some who think we shouldn`t do missions like this one, just on principle.

But I trust the president and his leadership and I support trying to do something...........trying to help in some way to get this kony,this mini hitler/stalin/pol-pot...... killed or captured.

Little trickier in the case of the LRA from a number of angles, their being Christian is the least of it - most of these combatants are around 12 years old.

Moonhead -> RE: Limbaugh's other screwup (3/12/2012 7:32:58 AM)

The really disgusting thing is that's quite common in that part of Africa.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Limbaugh's other screwup (3/12/2012 8:20:19 AM)

I'm tempted to start an entire thread about stupid, ignorant shit Rush has said over the years that he was completely wrong about. I actually had mentioned his Konya statement in the Konya thread a few days ago, but I am sure there will be plenty of other fodder for such a thread. At the top of the list was when he said Michael J Fox was faking or exaggerating the symptoms of Parkinson's. I have met Michael J Fox. He isn't faking it. I am sure he wished he was.

Part of this backlash against Rush is cumulative; he has been behaving like this for years.

I know this sounds a little cold but, if they're old enough to point a weapon at our troops, they're old enough to be "enemy combatants". We frequently get blamed for not taking the "feelings" of other nations and people into account. Well, if their culture says they're old enough to be a "warrior", I have no issue with our military treating them that way.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Limbaugh's other screwup (3/12/2012 8:41:20 AM)

That does sound cold, now that you mention it. Particularly since his army consists of children stolen from their parents against their will.

As long as Michael J. has the correct insurance and it doesn't cost tax payers, anything. Right?

Very true......trying to figure out why some issues/events become popular/known is like trying to figure out why some songs become hits and others fall flat.

There was a tipping point here, tho.

A perfect storm where many factors struck at once.Not the least of which was social media.

He`s been as outrageous in the past...and more so at times.But about people in the public eye who participated in politics in some way,like Michael J Fox,who did a commercial.

One of the excuses Ann Coulter gave for attacking some of the 9/11 widows so viciously was they were getting involved in politics so they were fair game.

I don`t think anyone but the extremists feel that way but Coulter operates in the sub-strata of media.....like rush does so it didn`t matter anyway.

Of course the cons are going to blame "liberal media"(like social media is controlled,bunch of dopes[:D])and scream unfair because Maher said something bad,once,and apologized.So weak when one considers the thousands of cowardly smears rush&Co. has made daily.

But in the end it`s where the money goes that makes the decisions.

If it was more profitable to keep rush,businesses would have kept their ads on his show.

It`s only because they are being pressured by their costumers(social media and purchase power)that they are dropping him.

I don't care if they're ten-year-old products of genetic engineering. If they're old enough to raise a weapon against our troops, I don't intend to send our troops anywhere to be targets; they're warriors.

Good point. India have a nuclear programme and are gearing up their space programme quite handily, so they have a pretty decent claim by now.

I'm sure that's how the idf feels about those stone throwing Palestinians who think that they can bottle out of being treated as armed combatants with this bullshit excuse that they're underaged.

The Russians are no slouches either and like the Chinese communists...can be real dicks when it comes to influencing events....as recently demonstrated with Syria
