My advice is from a layperson's perspective! I am *not* a safety officer, nor do I have much knowledge, nor practice in safe pony play. That being said, here's my two pound fifty p:
Are you concerned about skin surface damage or deep tissue/bone/spine damage? Is she going to be your rider, or are you just going to wear the gear and have her train you on a lead?
If skin damage is the concern, I would recommend that you purchase equipment specifically designed for pony play. If you do want to use real horse equipment, my bid is on a synthetic or cloth saddle. They shape better to the "animal." Proper blanketing or clothing should protect you from chafing. Note: Real wool chafes like a sunnovabitch!
If your concern is maintaining your physical health and she is going to be your rider, determine what you can safely carry and on what part of your body. If you have no prior injuries and if you can hold your Lady in your arms without strain, you *may* *probably* be safe with her riding on your shoulders or back, with you standing upright. If she is a bigger gal, and/or if you have back/neck/joint issues, you should both be concerned with the weight ratio and come to a mutual agreement to have her ride you with you on all fours and her bearing some of her own weight.
Good guardians protect their pets!
If you cannot bear her weight at all, yet you still want the experience of her using you as her horse, a *human* pony cart is a great alternative. She may not be your rider, but she can still be your driver.
The best advice I can give you is to look for websites devoted to serious discussion of pony play, where you can get insiders' views and tips about safe and fun play.
