A police car in a driveway is a crime deterrent for the whole block while the officer is off duty and crime deterrence is the job of the police. 2. The department doesn't have to have a HUGE assed parking lot for all the cars that aren't on patrol at any given time. This saves the taxpayers a ton of $.

Kind of a silly idea fargle as police cars have a lot of modifications that passenger cars don't. Radios, gun racks, video, special door locks, barrier between the front and back seats, crash bars, lights n siren, etc. As for B of A and other investment houses, don't be too sure that they don't still have the 'company car' as a perk for executives.

This has only been true for about the last 20-30 years. Police were always an after-the-fact agency. They were never set up to be pro-active. While there's always been some amount of deterrent with police presence, it was never really their fiat. Lately, we have come to demand a more pro-active policy of the police departments. Of course its not a perk to be on duty 224/7, but some jobs call for it. I can guarantee I don't make near enough to justify my 24/7 status, but I do it willingly because I care about my clients and sometimes there just isn't anybody to do the job as my immediate supervisor and myself are the program's only employees. A few weeks after my granddaughter was born, I volunteered to babysit, at my daughter's house, so that she and husband could have an evening out (it was her birthday). There was a major incident at work and I had to drive the 35 miles to take care of it, taking the baby along with me, but first my son had to drive 55 miles from his friend's place to pick me up. Recently, two clients lost their father in a major accident and I ended up spending all of Thursday night into Friday morning with them. Not a part of my job description at all, but the boss was not able to do it. And I just got a call from one of the brothers...So I'm off to work at nearly midnight on a Saturday.

I called 911 when I was in miami about a bullet coming thru the front window and it took 45 minutes and the person who showed up wasn't even a real cop but some "Civilian Auxiliary". She was so courageous that she wouldn't go near the hole in the window because of a spider web. In this town, a 911 call will generally get you 2 carloads of cops in well under 5 mins. and they'll be the real McCoy, not some wannabe.
