The military is stretched beyond the breaking point.

When the All-Volunteer military system was devised, no one expected only 1% of the US population would bear the entire burden of armed conflict. WWII lasted for 4 years with 16.1 million service members.

Afghanistan/Iraq has lasted for 10 years. Small wonder the military are recycling thrice deployed brain-damaged service members back to the fight.

If everyone, chickenhawks included, had loved ones called up to serve, we would see how long it would take to find an end to this slaughter (US military AND Afhgan/Iraqi civilians).

Better yet, stop spending trillions of dollars and thousand of lives on wars we shouldn't have started in the first place.

MrBukani -> RE: Enact the Draft! (3/17/2012 12:05:02 PM)

I was one of the last in the draft in Holland.
Our soldiers were one of the best in the world.
Thats logical cause all intelligent civilians were drafted too.
Thats gone now and the quality of our army is not what it was off course.
That could be a cause why there are so many post war traumas now, with US servicemen.

edit I said the cause I mean a cause.
I saw what military training already can do to dumb people, some totally broke down.

hlen5 -> RE: Enact the Draft! (3/17/2012 12:05:31 PM)

Agreed! We should not have been there in the first place, (hopefully!) we are on the downside, but let's share the burden with NO ONE getting special treatment a la 1960's Nat'l Guard or student deferments.

TheHeretic -> RE: Enact the Draft! (3/17/2012 12:10:17 PM)

Rather than a strictly military draft, I think we would be far better served by a system requiring some form and period of national service for all young people, with the armed forces as one option to meet the obligation.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Enact the Draft! (3/17/2012 12:31:55 PM)

As the father of a combat Marine, and someone who's no stranger to serving their country, I like Heretic's idea ... sort of.

Because the draft hasn't been around for most of my life (I was 9, the last time there was a draft), I haven't thought on it much but, I'm wondering about the draft when you examine it through the 5th amendment.

I know I registered for selective service 29 days before my 18th birthday as I was required to do. I was looking forward to serving, anyway. It wasn't a problem for me. However; if we look at the fact that 18 year olds haven't had much of a chance to vote and that would seem to indicate a denial of "due process", I'm not exactly sanguine on this.

Now, I have said for years that it is assinine that an 18 year old can be sent to fight and die for their country but cannot enjoy a beer at their local pub. I would like to see any military or any kind of compulsory service be raised to the age of at least, 21.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Socialist Volunteerism?

We had a plan like that called civil draft, the ones who refused to serve in the military could work in a nursinghome. Never happened. Maybe if there is some tax benefit to it people would do it more easily. Like I heard of the studentplan for US service people, that seems to work.
But I think most people dont even want that. We are way to ego-centric.

We had a draft during the Vietnam War and that lasted longer than WW 2. I'm afraid your premise is faulty, unless of course, unlike the Vietnam Draft, no exemptions are allowed for strategic occupation, University enrollment, and gender. [8|] That might have the effect you desire.

Sort of a form of indentured servitude without money, then? Where's the Liberty in that?

And can you imagine the bureaucracy you would need to oversee the process of assigning and monitoring?

DaddySatyr -> RE: Enact the Draft! (3/17/2012 1:18:14 PM)

I have often said that we could offer an education for "volunteerism" type thing.

You want to be a lawyer? Can't afford law school? We'll send you to the best law school that will accept you.

When you get out, you come to work for the government (with a modest salary) for 7-10 years. After that, you're obligation is discharged and you have the education which tax dollars bought for you.

I think this would be even more beneficial if we were to really try to enact some kind of British-styled health care system. The doctors, though they may be greedy, money-grabbing bastards, wouldn't be able to act on their inclinations.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

We got paid in the draft here, it was minimum wage but we still got paid. I dont see why this cannot continue.
I must say I learned more about people in the army then I did learn about people in school.

TheHeretic -> RE: Enact the Draft! (3/17/2012 1:34:41 PM)

We pay our military, don't we, Vincent? Now we can certainly have forms of national service that don't pay any better than jury duty, say for the on-call sandbag stackers of a hypothetical community civil response force, but I'd have this thing huge enough that they are replacing a goodly chunk of the workforce across all levels of government employment.

Edit for clarity - that's all levels of jurisdiction - city, county, state, federal - not all levels of a particular organization.

Slime lime green reflective vests, and rescue my ass orange jumpsuits would be the most common fashion accessories, I think.

They can have unit patches, though.

Well seeing as the current administration is planning on forcefully retire a good number of our military, a draft doesn't seem to be necessary.

One of those old fashioned "carts" with a garbage can and a broom sticking out of it on a "shield-shaped" shoulder patch?

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Hmmmmmm My photo wouldn't work

Moonhead -> RE: Enact the Draft! (3/17/2012 2:57:35 PM)

To be fair, your administration is working on the assumption that they can fight wars without an army.
(I don't see why a draft would be a problem, anyway. The elite's kids can claim that they're 4f because they've got a wart on their arses or go awol from the national guard, and the untermensch can go and get shot to make sure that they won't end up on welfare.)

DaddySatyr -> RE: Enact the Draft! (3/17/2012 2:57:45 PM)

Trying, again ...
