I could do a search, but alas, I don't seem to be able to use that function very well!

Which cat o nail tails is a good entry (don't giggle) or beginner level whip?

I'm keen to give it a go and Sir is more than happy to oblige. The cost and materials seem to vary.

Any advice appreciated

That's going to depend on exactly what it is you're actually looking for. Do you want an actual cat o nine tails, or a flogger? They're very different beasts.

As I understand it, a cat commonly has braided tails that may incorporate knots or weights or even 'claws' at the tips. A flogger generally has a fall consisting of flat tails.

I suspect you want a flogger. A flogger made of light to medium thickness suede leather with tails half an inch wide or more would make for a more moderate (and somewhat 'thuddier') device. Lightweight smooth leather would also make for a good starter flogger, that would tend to have a touch more sting to it than suede. You could also look into a flogger made of cloth or rope, I've never experienced either one but they do sound intriguing.

Go with a deerskin flogger. Your master will be able to swing for the fences until his arm feels like it's gonna fall off and you'll keep your hide intact. Ask me how I know :)

I agree that you should start with a flogger. They might look intimidating to new people (30ish whips at the same time!! Omg) but having more falls means the impact is spread through a greater area, thus causing less pain. deer and pigskin is a good entry. Suede is nice too but a bit heavier. If money is an issue, you can also make your own with very little knowledge or tools (rope cut into a bunch of pieces and bound together).

 Let's start at the beginning.

A cat of nine tails is different than a flogger and a flogger is different than a whip.

An actual cat of nine tails is NOT a beginner's toy.  I think you might prefer something that won't rip your skin apart in unskilled hands.

Drop Me a note if you would like.  I can probably help you to pick out something.

Lady Pact,
May I ask you to briefly describe a flogger, cat-o-nine tails and the difference between the two?

A cat o 9 has braids and 9 "falls" if you will. The edges could have knots or beads or other items on the edges and is not for the beginner. It can have the ability to cut or welt the skin very quickly.

A flogger can be made stingy or thuddy depending on the material used, number of falls, the width of the falls etc. A flogger can be made from multiple materials such as leather, rope, lacing etc. Since you are unsure, you need to figure a few things out as to what type of play you like.

Yeah, you want a flogger. Extreme Restraints has some very good quality gear, I can attest to that. I have ordered from them for years, and quality does not vary. It's good to excellent (depending on product). Customer service is very good.

Do some research about the gear you choose (please). I have personally left marks from a heavy suede flogger, and I am not exactly well known for my upper body strength (I'm a tiny person.)

I have (more than one) small leather flogger that looks innocent as all hell that can do some major damage.

A real cat o nine? Don't even think about it unless you are *very* skilled. Same with any actual whip. Practice makes perfect on those babies.

Let's put it this way: I have been flogging people for years, if you put a whip in my hand, I would 1) pray I was dressed in leather and 2) practice til my arm fell off.

BTW: You can buy floggers with knots and such. Again, lengthy practice on a non human target is the key.

On a related note, I was wondering if there were any decent non-leather floggers that anyone would recommend? I've seen a few leatherette ones for sale, but they looked like cheap junk.

Making a flogger of any kind takes some skill. So even though you may find some rubber or like ones for sale, the price has more to so with the labor than the ingredients used to make it.

I have seen floggers made from all kinds of things, from the softest fur (I've made some of those myself) to nasty twisted nylon rope, and everything in between.

If you seek a cheaper option, learn to make your own. The web has loads of info. Just remember, if you are using your flogger to actually flog, the tails, whatever they be made of, need to be attached to a handle in such a way the whole thing fits in your hand well AND won't fall apart.

You are not the only one praying you are dressed in leather

YES!

Definitely a flogger to start off with, a Co9 is actually a vicious weapon that needs a lot of skill, this comes from the time of boats were people were punished with a Co9 (too small to swing a cat goes back to the cat of 9 tails), it's a rather vicious instrument that had metal bits at the end of the 9 tails and tore skin, I think anything above 30 strokes was considered to be a death punishment, you really really do not want a beginner to have one of those.

Smiles and blows a kiss to the hunkaliscious mummyman.

As fetching as I'm sure I would be dressed all in leather, in this instance it wouldn't be for looks (you pervs), it would be to protect myself from my own whip. New whip handlers are notorious for being off target, and once you get some momentum going with even a short (6 feet) snake whip, that tail can come back at you in a nasty ass way.

I hate it when I flail myself with my own whip! It's sooooo undomly.

I'm not necessarily looking for a cheaper option, just one not made out of animal products. We're both vegetarians, and prefer to avoid that. I'd just like one that's a decent quality and preferably still has more or less that heavy thuddy feel that a suede one does.

Do a google search, you should find tons of rubber like and faux leather floggers. Once you find some you like, make sure and put the sites on here a/o Fet and get some advice; not everyone who makes floggers for sale on the net does a good job.

I've seen some fall apart the first use.

As with most things, it's often best to spend a bit more and get quality.

Rubber is an option but I found them harsher than most leather ones...
