The Bloomberg administration is now taking the term “food police” to new depths, blocking food donations to all government-run facilities that serve the city’s homeless.

In conjunction with a mayoral task force and the Health Department, the Department of Homeless Services recently started enforcing new nutritional rules for food served at city shelters.

Since DHS can’t assess the nutritional content of donated food, shelters have to turn away good Samaritans.

It really baffles me why anyone would want to live in NYC, or San Francisco... All the local government want's to do is control every aspect of your lives.

What on earth makes you think Bloomberg is a progressive?

He's a Republican. Kinda disqualifies himself from the "Progressive" camp, neh?

Charles6682 -> RE: Bloomberg's War On The Homeless... (3/19/2012 3:50:31 PM)

He's not a Republican anymore. He switched to being an "Independent".Even as a "Republican",he was still considered a Moderate.Of course, being Mayor of NYC which overwhelming votes for Demcrats,he has to bend a little to the middle.

His own website names him as a Independent, his actions as Mayor name him as a progressive.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Bloomberg's War On The Homeless... (3/19/2012 4:46:26 PM)

There are Republican progressives. They don't get very far, nationally but it happens.

By the same token, you get the occasional democrat that isn't very progressive. George Wallace standing on the school steps, barring black children from entering? It happens on both sides of the fence.

In NYC, particularly, the populace is sooooo Democratic that no one that's considered a "true Republican" would ever win election there. It's one of the reasons why people cast an eye toward NYC mayors for presidential runs.

By contrast, Mayor Koch won two elections while appearing on three (or four) tickets and two of them were "Republican" and "Democrat".

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Any program that gets government dollars has to start enforcing these new codes.

It is going to cause us to raise meal prices 50 cents next year. We have had 10 cents in increases in 10 years.

I think that Mrs. Obama, rather than helping those in need, has shot them in the foot. Or the gut.

Well, the first lady has made nutrition one of her main issues. You know how Nancy Reagan had "Just Say No"?

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I know, but it still seems a bit of a stretch to be fingering her for decisions by the New York City bureaucracy.

The NYC folks are doing what the federal folks require them to do.

Do you have a link/source for that? There's no mention of the feds in the OP, and I wasn't able to open subrob's link.

Well, I understand but out-spoken first ladies can be human starting guns. They say it and people fall all over themselves to get it done. It's amazing that someone that "holds a post" that isn't even a post in the government, wields that much power but, they do.

Of course, not all of them avail themselves of that megaphone but quite a few have. That palin Hillary Clinton comes to mind. Nancy Reagan, Betty Ford (mostly after her hubby was out of office, though), Bess Truman (to a small extent), and Eleanor Roosevelt (off the top of my head. I might have missed or mis-judged some).

Peace and comfort,

Michael
