I'm hoping most on here will be familiar with the Welsh wizard. Former member of the Velvets (and, despite what several halfwits have alleged, the real talent in the band, rather than Lou "the wall eyed pike" Reed as the couple of albums that appeared after he was forced out of the band were just dull garageband plod), excellent record producer (the Stooges album he produced pisses all over the one Bowie fell asleep at the mixing desk for), and the only mad to take an axe to his piano on a children's television show.

Some evidence for those who don't know the man's work:
I Keep A Close Watch
Dying On The Vine
Dirty Ass Rock'n'Roll
Perfect

Cale is clearly a giant among men, but what's the best part of his schtick?

There's loads of clips I could have used, to be fair.
(He definitely does that one a shitload better than Laughin' Lenny C ever did, though...)

Most people who know the cover versions are mainly familiar with Buckley's and more recently, Rufus Wainwright's.

Which is wrong, really, as Wainwright's version is godawful.

If forced to choose I'll go with the voice, he's got
an amazing voice which I guess the Welsh
are sort of famous for.
He definitely gets a good star for the
Stooges album.
Falling out with Loooou? I don't
sense there will be a reconciliation.
And since Nico is dead...
I think his version of Hallelugah is
beautiful. Think he thinks about Lou
when he sings it?
I like Leonards version pretty well,
he's a great songwriter and I like
him as a vocalist.
I like the Buckley version to but it's
been a bit overplayed. I lived not far
from where he drowned.
I can only take Rufus Wainwright in
small doses and his version leaves
me pretty cold.
Also on a shallow note Cale's kinda sexy.

The sexy thing isn't really my call, but he's definitely wearing a lot better than the metal machine munchkin these days...

Another clip I should have included in the OP:
Rage Against The Dying Of The Light
(Cale does Thomas a teensy bit better than Iron Midden did Tennyson...)
