I disagree with your analogy. You can't have a car without both parts, but you can certainly engage in S/m without any D/s in the mix and it's still S/m.

If I stick 100 clothespin on my breasts, then pierce my nipples just because I like the pain from that, where is the D/s involved? I'm not dominanting anyone, I'm not submitting to anyone.. simply enjoying the sensations of pain which I've created for myself.

Now, I might be considered mental because I like doing that.. I might need therapy if I do it and don't like that I'm doing it.. but it's still a sadomasochistic activity. If I throw some ankle cuffs on at the same time, then I've got 3 of the four elements of BDSM and none of them are D/s.

S&M are activities, D/s are roles.

I am an employee and I have a boss, those are roles. Typing and filing are things I do. It could be argued that my boss is a sadist for making me type and file. I type, therefore I am a typist, I don't like it, therefore I am NOT a masochist. Typing and filing are only two things I do in my role as an employee. Making me type and file is only one thing my boss does in her role.
