Hello and welcome to ‘Things to ponder’. I’ve started this thread because we all have unanswered questions in life and it may be a good way of finding the answers we seek. So I have always wondered the following:

1. On keyboards why does the ‘F’ and the ‘J’ have a bump?
2. On keyboards what exactly does ‘alt’ mean and how does this vary from its evil twin ‘alt gr’?
3. One last keyboard related question is what does ‘sysrq’ do?

I feel someone should have plucked out these useless keys years ago.

I would be grateful if these problems could be solved for me and if you have questions please feel free to ask I know lots of useless crap. If anyone mentions Google to me I will scream k?

ooh, ooh - i know one! - the 'f' and 'j' keys have the special scooped curvature in order to allow people who touch-type to find their 'home keys' quickly and easily.

Here are the things I wonder about:

1) Will they ever go to using a more efficent keyboard? The Qwerty method is designed to slow down typist, from when the type writers would jam. (I know they have a more efficent keybord designed, but it's not easy to find.)

2) Why do people pay to walk on a treadmill, when there is a better view for free outside?

3) If down were up and up were down, would we all be walking upside down?

Yes touch typing I think it is, thanks siouxie.

In answer to you missgiveNTake I think the following are the answers you seek:

1. Yes the French use it. It’s called an ‘azerty’. They always like to think they know better.

2. People go to the gym to perv on other people at the gym who wear tight Lycra.

3. I think you would be walking Downside up but I’m going to have to confirm that with an independent panel of judges.

As for my questions someone has since told me that the ‘alt gr’ means alternative graphics and is used to put accents on letters such as É. I still have no idea what the ‘sysrq’ button does.

1.  Why do P/pl who do not register and do not vote still gripe on talk radio about the government?

2.  Why is it that the last station to fade out when Y/you drive on the freeway is inevitably some bible-thumper ranting?

3.  Why do Men leave the seat up; pee in the snow; and light T/their farts?

4.  Why isn't there a "thinking woman's" version of Cosmopolitan magazine?
