Fearing that certain words and topics can make students feel unpleasant, officials are requesting 50 or so words be removed from city-issued tests.

The word “dinosaur” made the hit list because dinosaurs suggest evolution which creationists might not like, WCBS 880′s Marla Diamond reported. “Halloween” is targeted because it suggests paganism; a “birthday” might not be happy to all because it isn’t celebrated by Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Didn't read the article - thanks for the piece-o-it, Kirata. Is the list avaiable someplace in cyber-space? Christmas on the list? Easter? Passover? and what's that new-to-the-West thing? Kum-ba-ya? Buddhism on or off? I can think of 50 religious words.... what are some of the others? 12 easy - signs of the Zodiac...... etc.

I used to work for a classroom magazine, and one year I went to a presentation on the no-no's of textbook publishing, It was mind-blowing. The presenter showed various images, and we had to guess why they'd been rejected. One, I remember, showed an interracial couple. Another, a placid landscape just after a rain storm, puzzled everyone until yours truly pointed out that the rainbow can be a gay symbol.

Though technically not words, they could also remove C, D, and F. Exam, test, quiz, grade, etc. I do recall there being angst linked to those letters and words.

Too late. I've had college students cry over a B- as an unheard of slam of a low grade.
