Status: offline 		In sensational allegations, respected BBC program 'Panorama" alleges Murdoch's News Corp subsidiary Sky TV has been implicated in a criminal plot to bankrupt its only UK competitor. Hacked access codes and fake cards enabled consumers to access its rival without paying any subscription fees, thereby depriving it of income, sending it bankrupt and delivering a Pay TV monopoly to Sky in the lucrative UK market.

The potential implications of these claims, if proven, could be disastrous for Murdoch's media empire, on both sides of the Atlantic. Will these allegations turn out to be the last nails in the coffin of News Corp?

Seems after the news of the world fall, if this is proven true, it will be a big fat nail to the corp in general.

Status: offline 		OMG. This, if true will be HUGE. Not only did they allegedly force their competitor out of business using illegal means, but Murdoch also bought the assets of the defunct business, presumably at fire sale prices.

The law doesn't apply to Murdoch over here. There's thirty odd years of evidence for that.

Status: offline 		Similar accusations surfacing regards TV in Australia. I fail to see how this wont be acted on by the police, since it is clearly an act of theft.

Its about time the shareholders dumped Murdoch.

I hope not, at least for a little while. Murdoch's pissed off with our government here after having his corp dragged through the mud by them and it looks like he's begun to turn his guns on them in his various media as a result. Fun! I'd like to see both Murdoch's empire *and* our government go down.

The government, without a doubt. Murdoch's empire has been a malign influence on our political culture for decades. This government will fall sooner or later anyway.

The last conservative government we had with any spine was back before he started buying up our print and broadcast media. There's been a few suggestions that there might be a connection there. hell, I'm sure you can remember the reulsive spectacle of the (alleged Labour) Blair fawning and grovelling to the redtops...

Oh yes. . . . Most vividly of all, I remember Tony and Rebekkah meeting and doing the kissy-kissy thing. The most hideous symbol of it all, for me.

It would indeed be ironic, Tweak. But my main concern is that a) this scrotum-faced, repulsive old wanker's influence on the UK's polity gets crippled and b) as a result, the politicians of this country finally develop the testicles to do what we elect them to do without being quite so hamstrung by the Fourth Estate, of which he's been the emperor for so many dismal decades.

Staff at Sky have now admitted to phone hacking to get news stories. OFCOM, the UK watchdog is looking to see if BSKYB are fit and proper to hold a broadcasting lisence. This isnt looking good for them in all honesty.

Sky's admission of invovlement in phone hacking is also significant in this respect: As far as I am aware, this is the first time that the electronic media has been directly and conclusively implicated in this illegality Some of those implications include:
*electronic media is far less locally based than print, with obvious flow ons in the US for Fox and other electronic media in the Murdoch empire;
*Murdoch's strategy of trying to contain the illegality to a few individuals, and then to one section of the empire lies in ruins;
*Murdoch's control of Sky is now endangered to an unknown extent, but might eventually result in News Corp being forced to divest itself of its interests in Sky.

There are many more implications - they amount to a lot more than marking the end of James Murdoch's career in the media. The integrity, behaviour and practices of the entire (electronic and print) media industry, not just the Murdochs, is now in the spotlight.

At worst (or, depending on your point of view, at best) they point to the possible end of the Murdoch family's quasi-monopoly of the media.
