On your most recent tax filing, did you claim all the deductions and exemptions you knew the law allows you to claim?

Not all the deductions and exemptions are worth my time.

Not quite all of them. Some deductions like the "home office" which I have but didn't claim are almost a guarantee of an audit. Even if they don't find anything, it's a pain in the ass.

kalikshama -> RE: On your most recent tax filing, did you claim all your deductions? (3/28/2012 10:45:15 AM)

Why do you ask?

I voted Yes, but was paid via W-2 and extra deductions weren't any issue.

LaTigresse -> RE: On your most recent tax filing, did you claim all your deductions? (3/28/2012 11:34:52 AM)

Of course.

I pay my accountant a nice fat paycheck to do the best for me he can. He is good and I appreciate all of his work. He is well worth the price. With the money I am getting back, my kitchen is getting an awesome new cooking centre. I will be able to bake cookies evenly again! And, no more microwave taking up counter space.

Not to mention, part of the refund will go towards paying the tax accountant!

Just asking, kalikshama. I mean, if someone were to, perhaps, think that some aren't paying enough taxes, and still claim all the deductions he or she was currently legally allowed to claim, wouldn't that be a little bit hypocritical?

So, if I were make the claim that the rich should pay more than the poor, and take all my deductions and exemptions, would I be a hypocrite when I know there are others who are more poor than me? Obama took all his exemptions, even though he made the claim that he had hundreds of thousands of dollars he didn't need after paying taxes. If he had more than he needed, why did he claim the exemptions? He didn't need to. He didn't have to. He could have claimed zero exemptions and zero deductions. He could have paid more in taxes, but he didn't.

I didn't look at Biden's return so I can't make any comment on his. I haven't seen (and don't expect I would be able or allowed to) Warren Buffett's, so I don't know if he claimed all his deductions. His company is fighting a tax case where the IRS is claiming they haven't paid enough. I know Corporate taxes and personal taxes are usually separate, but it's still a general trend.

Maybe he thinks that self righteous libertarians who've read too much Heinlein won't vote for him if he doesn't make a show of trying to weasel out of paying some taxes.

Hillwilliam -> RE: On your most recent tax filing, did you claim all your deductions? (3/28/2012 11:51:39 AM)

Some deductions aren't taken because of the law of diminishing returns.

For instance, if I claim the home office deduction, My accountant has to spend more time which costs me more money and then it greatly increases the chances of an audit which costs me a half day of work for what? Maybe........... $30-$50? It's just not worth it.

Moonhead -> RE: On your most recent tax filing, did you claim all your deductions? (3/28/2012 11:52:45 AM)

Chill, d00d. I was just making a crap joke about the Libertarian allergy to paying taxes, dig?

servantforuse -> RE: On your most recent tax filing, did you claim all your deductions? (3/28/2012 12:04:51 PM)

I don't have anything to deduct. I am not part of the 49% that pays nothing and still gets money back.

LaTigresse -> RE: On your most recent tax filing, did you claim all your deductions? (3/28/2012 12:13:26 PM)

Fortunately for the federal government, I've been paying out the ass in taxes for 12+ years.

littlewonder -> RE: On your most recent tax filing, did you claim all your deductions? (3/28/2012 12:44:10 PM)

Yup...if I can take the deduction I take it. I saved all my receipts from repairing my home before I sold it so I could take every penny I could. I took deductions for selling it. I got money back for the first time in 15 years.

Until the law changes for the rich then don't be surprised if they take every deduction that's allowable. What human being wouldn't unless it's to their disadvantage?

If they are going to take every deductible allowable, they can't really complain about the rich not paying enough. Trust me, there is probably someone out there that is richer or poorer than you, if not both.

The thing that gets me most, is that the people who complain most about people not paying enough taxes take every chance they get to not pay taxes. I mean, what's up with that? How is it not hypocritical for someone to complain, especially if they are in the group they are labelling "rich," that the rich aren't paying enough taxes?

And, where anyone gets off complaining about the rich not paying their "fair share" I have no idea. "The rich" pay well more than their fair share. I apologize in advance for the smallness of the picture. It's more readable on the page.

How is it, again, that the rich aren't paying their "fair share?"

Very nice color chart showing that the top 1% have been paying an increasingly large percentage of total income taxes.

mnottertail -> RE: On your most recent tax filing, did you claim all your deductions? (3/28/2012 2:28:09 PM)

Cuz you plain dont get it thats why.

someone say a family of four with an income of 34,500 pays 850 plus 15%.  What are the chances they have a good lot of deductions?  4 x 5000 dependents 20000 at 850 plus 15%. @25% base plus.

Now a guy that makes a million, pays a 100k and 35% of what he cannot deduct.
@10% base plus.

LaTigresse -> RE: On your most recent tax filing, did you claim all your deductions? (3/28/2012 2:46:08 PM)

That math just might be too complex for him Ron.

mnottertail -> RE: On your most recent tax filing, did you claim all your deductions? (3/28/2012 2:49:56 PM)

Or he doesnt understand percentage of AGI he is just looking at the percentage of all people who are taxed, and thinking, jesus?  A whale weighs more than a pound of gold?

farglebargle -> RE: On your most recent tax filing, did you claim all your deductions? (3/28/2012 6:01:46 PM)

My last tax filing was NYS Sales tax, and there aren't any deductions on that form. There are CREDITS, but none worth discussing.

Can we possibly keep it away from personal attacks and simply keep it on topic?

That would be a refreshing change.
