Toppingfrmbottom -> Tonight we will have crock pot chicken chillie for dinner. (3/29/2012 10:33:06 AM)

I am trying a new meal, crock pot chicken chilli i have never made it before and i had to fudge some ingrediants, like using 1 ounce more tomato sauce than it called for and using a green onion from the garden instead of a round yellow onion. and id idnt put in the teaspoon of chili powder they said to put in cause id on't like chilli powder. And i used black beans instead of red kidney beans, cause we didn't have any red.

i hope it turns out good, i want daddy to like it, and me too of course.

Sounds good! I love my crockpot.

I make substitutions like that all the time.

The different onion will change the flavor, but you are not likely to notice.  and id idnt put in the teaspoon of chili powder they said to put in cause id on't like chilli powder. Well, without the chili powder, it isn't really chili, is it?  But if you don't like it, that's ok.  And i used black beans instead of red kidney beans, cause we didn't have any red.  Also will change the taste, but nothing to worry about.

i hope it turns out good, i want daddy to like it, and me too of course.

You didn't mention what kind of chicken you used.  It would have been best to pre-cook and then shred and add.

In any case, good for you for making something yourself.  Crock pots are a God-send for busy people and people who don't like to cook, but want decently healthy food.  You could feasibly never cook in anything but a crock pot, and why not?  Add all ingredients, cover, turn it on and come back several hours later to a delicious meal (that has also likely gotten your taste buds watering from smelling it all day!)

I am concerned because there's still 2 hours to go and it's 100 percent still liquidy, and so i am trying to turn it on high for an hour an 30 to see how that goes and if it's not cooked off I am calling it soup I wanna eat dammit.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Tonight we will have crock pot chicken chillie for dinner. (3/29/2012 4:26:39 PM)

Trying not to waste an ounce of tomato sauce. If it didn't go in the recipe it would have just sat around getting old and finally have been wasted. I used boneless skinless c hicken breast, though i prefer chicken with skin on but last time Daddy bought chicken he got boneless skinless for me, so that's what i am using.

The recipe said to cook the chicken in the crock pot and so that's what i did. presumably so it'd be tender and fall of the bone ish, ironic even though there's no bones in boneless chicken.

Toppingfrmbottom -> I hate the chicken chilli (3/29/2012 5:47:01 PM)

It sucks big balls, an not the sexy way. in my opinion.

first of all the boneless skinless chicken breast is bland and has no flavor skinless sucks ass, the skin is where the flavor is, but skinless is all we had.

Second, it tastes nothing like chilli, and with out the gorgious flavor skin gives the chicken, it's just corn and beans an that sucks, i could of opened a can and thrown it in my mouth, and eaten 7 hours ago, for what a fucking disappointment this dish is. And daddy tried saying i found it to suck because i didn't put the chilli powder in it an that has nothing to do with why it sucks. It just would have sucked an i wouldnt have been able to eat it if i had included chilli powder.

KMsAngel -> RE: I hate the chicken chilli (3/29/2012 6:01:29 PM)

when i crock pot chilli i always put in chili - you don' need a lot, and over the course of hours, the flavour mellows to the degree where it's merely background. if you want strong taste, add spices just before the end.

i also cook the meat and onions and garlic prior to adding to the crock pot. doesn't need to be cooked all the way through, but braising meat gives it a nicer taste.

i'm careful with crock potting chicken as it can be incredibly bland unless you manipulate your spices and herbs.

just because this batch didn't work, don't give up on the recipe or the method of cooking. practice til you get it right.

I won't. i love my crock pot, it's not the pots fault the recipe didn't pan out.

Hey TFB
First, here's what makes it taste like chili-- the chili powder. You omitted the key ingredient. Substituting red for black beans and vice versa is a great idea--I add both beans.

And if ya want to cheat...cuz I do...

Here's what I do and it's DEEELICIOUS.

2 lbs of ground turkey--99% fat free--brown in a frying pan FIRST before adding
1 can of diced tomatoes
1 can of tomato paste
1 can of black beans (drained)
1 can of kidney beans (drained)
1 pack of McCormick slow cooker chili seasoning mixed with water per the packet instructions

Mix the seasoning mix with water per the instructions.
Brown the meat. Put the meat and all the ingredients into the pot. Drain the beans and add the beans. Pour the mix over it and stir, then Cook on HIGH for four hours or LOW for 8 hours and don't open the lid

Its so easy and really tasty. I serve with chopped onions and shredded lowfat cheese. YUM. I may have to make some now.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: I hate the chicken chilli (3/29/2012 6:16:20 PM)

this is the recipe

It doesn’t get any easier than this! Just throw it all together, make some cornbread and you’re done!

I’m a little bit wimpy when it come to spices, so I cut the chili powder in half. Add more if you are the adventurous type.

Crock Pot Chicken Chili
1 pound chicken breast halves or tenders
6 cups water (adjust for desired thickness)
2 cans (approx. 14.5 oz. each) chicken broth
2 cans (8 oz. each) cans tomato sauce
1 onion, diced
1 cup yellow corn
1 celery stalk, diced
1 can (14.5 ounces) can diced tomatoes
1 15-ounce can red kidney beans, plus liquid
1 jar (4 ounces) diced pimento, drained
1 jalapeno, diced (optional) Too spicy for me!
1 teaspoons chili powder
1 clove garlic, minced (or 1 tsp minced from a jar)
1/2 teaspoon salt

Place chicken in crock pot. Mix together all other ingredients and pour over chicken. Cook on LOW 7-8 hours. Shred chicken before serving. I always serve with cornbread but rolls work too.

hausboy -> RE: I hate the chicken chilli (3/29/2012 6:19:05 PM)

ooh I'm gonna try that this weekend

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: I hate the chicken chilli (3/29/2012 6:22:16 PM)

Thank you Hausboy. I'll have to try that next time.

I would probably have liked it ok if we had chicken with the skin on, a dish i love very much is similar to this dish, this dish had tomato sauce, and corn and beans, and chicken broth.

it's chicken, corn beans, salsa, and you cook it for 4 hours an then add a brick of cream cheese.

And the chicken skin is ALL fat.  When you use boneless, skinless breasts as someone else said, it is best to braise them a little first.  Or to marinate the chicken before you put it in the crock pot.

That recipe had a LOT of liquid in it, I'm not surprised it never thickened up.

The bones on the chicken add a lot of flavor as well.  And bone in chicken tends to be less expensive.  What I do when I buy bone in chicken is that I take MOST of the skin off before I cook it.  Leave a little bit on for the flavor that you want, but just a little.  Then you also aren't tempted to eat all that skin.  I know when I splurge on the rotisserie chickens that are already cooked in the store, I peel all the skin off while I'm slicing it.  Then I eat all that skin, because it is SOOO yummy, lol.

Like hausboy said, chili really isn't chili without chili powder.  Curry chicken wouldn't be curry chicken if you left the curry out either.  So when you come across a recipe where the basic premise of the dish contains a spice you really don't like, don't make the dish, save yourself the trouble and find something else.

angelikaJ -> RE: I hate the chicken chilli (3/29/2012 7:06:34 PM)

Tftb,

This is not a criticism but as has been pointed out, you made chili without the chili...which is probably why it tasted nothing at all like chili.

Your recipe only calls for 1 teaspoon.
That is just a little.
I think probably what you don't like is too much chili.

So, try it again with the chili next time. [:)]

LadyHibiscus -> RE: I hate the chicken chilli (3/29/2012 7:08:57 PM)

Both recipes look good, though chili doesnt like me very much. I had a beautiful white chili made with green chiles, and white beans, and NO ucky cilantro. No idea where the recipe is, of course.

it's funny...people either love cilantro or they hate it....

I love it!

It tastes like SOAP to me and my parents. I gather it's fantastic to the people that can taste it as a food.

(I can also eat asparagus without "aftereffects")

yep. my friend gags on it. I absolutely find it delicious. And I have had a bar of soap in my mouth. Cilantro is much better.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: I hate the chicken chilli (3/29/2012 8:50:12 PM)

I'm going to cut out the water, or at least so much of it. And try it again next time , with the correct ingredients, like the onion it called for, not green onions. black ground table pepper burns my mouth, and is unpleasant to me, i am that sensitive to spice. but maybe i could eat a small amount of chili powder and it wno't bother me, if it does i can always take an antacid.
