quote:
[J]ust like every religious believer through the millennia, Santorum observes the teachings of his church selectively. In this political primary race, he has advertised (or implicated) his Catholic bona fides when talking about abortion and contraception, and he has invoked his faith more broadly on issues such as pornography and family values. But on the following issues, Santorum’s position diverges — sometimes a lot — from that of his church. Story at Washington Post Given the focus on Santorum's faith, I was intrigued to read how he diverges from Catholic teaching in several areas, including the death penalty and torture. The article doesn't mention economics, but I suspect he may disagree with the bleeding heart bishop* who said, “The needs of the poor take priority over the desires of the rich.” Of course, Santorum is free to cherry-pick his faith, as countless others (including yours truly) do. I just think it's interesting, given that he's seen as such a "traditional Catholic" candidate (though he doesn't seem to be winning the votes of other Catholics). Thoughts? *Pope John Paul II
