So we have a new term in our racial vocabularly now, and I'm wondering what people think of it, and what the hell is it supposed to mean? It obviously has nothing to do with skin tone, because George is brown. Is it the new standard for people of mixed race? Would President Obama now be properly referred to as a "white black?" Maybe that's what Al Sharpton meant, when he said of Obama, "He might be our color, but he isn't our kind?" Does everybody have to play now? What about multiracial people? Does my neighbor now need to be a white asian black? Is it a cultural, or social class thing? Whether you had money or not, or where you grew up, or what sort of community you learned your life skills in? Seems like an awfully subjective measure, and a giant cannon, waiting to get loose on the deck. Again, will it get applied to the President? Again, is that what Sharpton meant? Does anybody feel like getting their head lopped off trying to assign simplistic, race-based labels to social class and background? Or was it just a stupid fucking yellow journalism stunt, to make sure a tragedy could be properly exploited in the standard "white racism against blacks" template the media applies to these kinds of events?

It is said that a black white man once became a Human Being. They are a very strange creatures. Not as ugly as the white man true; but they are just as crazy!

It refers to a person's ethnicity, not necessarily their culture. President Obama would not be called "white black" or "black white." The term that has been used for many years is Mulatto. Personally, I find it offensive that ethnicities who are "white" mixed with something else identify as only the something else, and completely disregard the white part of their heritage.

It's not new. It's been around at least since 1978 when I first got to miami.

White Hispanics were typically Cubans who had (or their parents) gotten out just before or after Castro taking over. (late 50s early 60s) They considered them selves to be the elite. Black Hispanics were typically Dominicans, venezuelans or Marielitos. Others were in the middle. They all hated each other with a passion.

Actually, Rich to be fair, I have met people of hispanic origin that label themselves, as white , if given the choice. Did it occur to you, that many of the fairer skin hispanics consider and call themselves white? The following, is from the link below, "Racial Classifications in South America". It seems to me the term has been in use long time [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Hispanic_and_Latino_Americans ]. I see nothing wrong with it. At least everybody understands what we are talking about.

Rich, check out this article from the Latin American Dispatch, about racism being prevalent among children in Mexico. Racism prevalent among children in Mexico Sadly, many of these racist attitudes are passed down from the parents to the children.

Ya, the term has been around for a while. "Based on the definitions created by the Office of Management and Budget and the U.S. Census Bureau, the concepts of race and ethnicity are mutually independent, and respondents to the census and other Census Bureau surveys are asked to answer both questions. Hispanicity is independent of race, and constitutes an ethnicity category, as opposed to a racial category."
