for hair cuts. I am assuming the 28 dollar people are more up to date on new styles and such. But other than they can what makes them worth so much more?

Generally, you get what you pay for.

Better stylists with better training, command more pay.

$28 is dirt cheap. I pay $65 and that's with the "family discount" because a friend is -co-owner.

That's pretty cheap. Like OsideGirl said, you get what you pay for. For most women, you want someone skilled, is creative and a good listener (both for gossip, and definitely for instructions).
I now see a woman who has converted part of her house as a home salon, and she charged me $80 for a shampoo, head massage, style cut & full head of foils. My previous visit to a hairdresser at a salon for the same cost me $210.

Holy cow. There was one time I splurged and paid a boatload of money to have my hair cut by someone well known in New York City, but generally my hair costs $25. With tip.

I have chemical sensitivities so do not patronize places that offer smelly services like perms, etc. I'm content with the cheap chain places - Super Cuts, Cost Cutters, etc.

Yup..I pay $120 for cut, color and highlights with the family discount. For a regular patron it would cost $250 and up. This is a top level salon. They've been written up in Elle, Vogue and Cosmo. They require that their stylists keep taking courses. They use top of the line products. The level of customer service is higher.

I have super thick, curly hair that absorbs water. A haircut takes 1.5 hours, just because it's hard to dry and then get it straight. Not once have they skimped or rushed.

I do everything at home........and I could get it done at a swanky place for free.

I generally HATE hair salons. They like to tell you how wonderful their products are versus the stuff we can buy ourselves, usually for less, at most other stores. Then pressure you into buying it. It's a bullshit scam. In fact, some of their high priced luxury products are actually worse for your hair than some of the discount stuff you can buy for much less.

In all my life I've only gotten 2 cuts at a salon that I didn't have to go home and re-cut it. And those two cuts where at a discount shop in a mall in Cedar Rapids. The woman was completely batshit crazy but damn, could she cut hair. Here in Iowa City, the most expensive salon does some of the ugliest, trendy cuts, I've ever seen.

So I figure, why waste the time and money when I can do it myself.

I guess I will apologize to the chick who cuts my hair for being upset when they went from $15 to $18.

She has cut my hair for 20 years now, I wouldn't let anyone else near it, for any amount of money.

Really? Getting it done right and spending some time and money on myself is nuts? I think I'm worth every penny.

I personally pay around $75 for a good haircut and that's just a cut and nothing more. When I get it highlighted it usually costs me around $200 to $275. For me, I like to know I look good once it's done. I want to know that where I go has reputable certifications, years upon years of experience and is highly respected. I also go to get waxes and pedicures every 2 weeks and I'm super, super, picky about those. Master thinks I'm crazy because I keep complaining that I have hated every single person I've gone to in Baltimore so far. He doesn't understand the differences but I notice them. I notice the stray hair they missed, the fact that when I get home I have to fix the pedi they messed up on, etc....

Then again I don't eat at McDonalds either. If I want a good food I'm going to pay more for it and it will be worth every penny.

Unfortunately I'm still trying to find a place in Baltimore that I like. Sigh. It's so hard to find another good one when you move.

despite being a woman...I'm rarely at hair salloons and encountered bad ones who charged more as well...so I disagree to the "you get what you pay for"... I can imagine that "maybe" (and just maybe) they use at times more expensive products, but for my few times I'm going to the hair dresser (approx once in 4 years) I know bad normal paid ones as well as bad posh paid ones and just remain happy for the view encounters I had with the good normal paid ones

With one exception that was my fault, i look good, it was done right, and was
i was happy and satisfied with the 8 dollar people cutting my hair. I'd personally rather buy fabric or some other collectors piece for our collections than to spend that kind of money on hair. Yes i think it's nuts. But that's the great thing about your money being yours, you can do it no matter what i think
