Okay, I've had an insommniac night, so maybe I'm just bitchy. But, and, yes, I know how annoying newcommers can sometimes be until they get to know us, but from time to time, on a regular basis, in fact, a new commer comes along and asks, 'how do I sort out the real ones from the not real ones'

And, granted, it's not a great question. And when pressed for details about what they mean by not real, do they, say, mean, not human, not breathing - they suggest things like - no, someone who wants their fantasies fullfilled. Hey, we ALL want our fantasies fulfilled. So they do a sucky job of telling us what they mean.

And they get told - everyone is real. everyone is a real human, everyone is real.

up where I live, we just had some of the worst tornadoes of the last centurary. And while no robots are going to show up at your door offering home repair services - everyone who knocks on your door will be a real human - some of them aren't real subcontractors. some of them are con men, in fact.

So I think we should admit, some people on CM - not usually on this side, though we do get the occasional troll or wanker - but some people on CM are simply not REAL. And, having more time and experience than the newbies who ask, I feel better qualified to say what I, at least, mean by real.

Really what they purport to be.

Really interested in me. If CM has to warn me in big red letters that you are habitually sending out more than ONE LETTER a MINUTE - you are not really interested in me, as a person.

And, last but not least, really not a con artist. Pros are not con artists, they offer a service, and everyone knows what they are getting and for how much. But there are con artists on here. And on my local vanilla boards, too. And how does some guy in nigeria get the web adress of a small town local American board, anyhow? I mean, how did he even find me there? but they do.

Not every good, decent, wholesome BDSMer is a match for every other, and that doesn't make them any less real. But, let's face it, not everyone is keeping it real.

LaTigresse -> RE: Not everyone is real (4/5/2012 4:03:16 AM)

If that is the case then I would venture to say that 99.9% of the people on the other side are 'not real'.

LadyPact -> RE: Not everyone is real (4/5/2012 4:11:00 AM)

I noticed you say something similar to this on another thread and was hoping you would start another to clarify.

I have been fortunate.  Over My years here, I have met over two hundred folks from the forum side of CM.  I've had a great time doing it.  There are at least two hundred more that I would like to meet.

There is still this great list in My head of folks that I would like to meet.

I enjoyed your whole post, but the part I bolded is what I agree with.

I think, a lot of us, on this side tend to forget what it was like when we first started out (don't flay me for that lol, please ). What I mean is...we were once newbies too, and as newbies, asked the same questions that we now see as idiotic, and lacking in basic common sense.

When I first came to these boards, I was totally ignorant of what BDSM, M/s, D/s, etc, etc could encompass and mean. Sure, I had lived with a man for a long time who had friends who were and are following the Gorean tennets; however, we did not label ourselves as such...my late husband never used the word slave, submissive, dominant to express who we were. I never even knew that our Gorean friends labeled themselves as such. I only knew who they were, and who we were...and that it was ok to be that way.

Then, I come here, and suddenly everyone is throwing out labels, names, rules, etc etc...the first month I was here, I remember thinking WHAT THE FUCK...and I know I asked some pretty stupid and lame ass questions. I may not have been a newcomer to the way of life that many of us practice, but I sure was a newcomer to the labeling of such a life. [:)]

Sometimes I forget what that confusion felt like. And sometimes, I need to reminded...as you did here. So for that, I thank you. [:D]

kitkat105 -> RE: Not everyone is real (4/5/2012 6:19:59 AM)

There is a BUNCH of people on here I'd be delighted to meet. Coffee, cake and outrageous conversations I'm sure would ensue.

This is one of my main complaints about the boards here on CM. Too many of the veterans have forgotten what it was like to be a newbie.

I hate it when newbies are immediately hit with snark or insults simply because they asked a question that someone felt was a "stupid" question. There's no such thing as a stupid question. If someone doesn't know, they should feel free to ask.

In particular, we are too quick to tell newbies that there question has already been asked before, and that they should use the search function. WTF? When I was a newbie, I didn't even realize that there was a search function, and I certainly didn't know how to use it. IMO, the fact that a question has been asked many times makes it a MORE VALID question, not less valid. The fact that it keeps getting asked must mean that many people are confused by it. But instead of realizing that, too many of the regulars on here piss on people who have the audacity to ask one of these common questions.

I know that this response is a digression from the thread topic, but it does address IrishMist's comment. More importantly, I just needed to get that off of my chest.

Okay, getting back on topic, I agree with you. There are people who aren't "real".

There are definitely scammers from Russia, Nigeria, and Ghana. There are definitely men who pretend to be women. There are definitely married guys who pretend to be single. There are definitely con artists. Anyone who comes to CM should be aware of this fact. If they're not, they'll become aware pretty quickly.

BTW, what is that about "warnings in big red letters"? I don't think I've ever seen that. Is that something that comes from the moderators? I've never even heard of warnings in red letters. But then again, I often hear forum members mentioning warnings from moderators that have a gold border, but I've never seen one of those either.

I'm not sure, but I think that my lack of awareness of warnings in red letters, and warnings with gold borders, probably means that I'm really boring. [:D]

tsatske -> RE: Not everyone is real (4/5/2012 7:41:36 AM)

Even though my name says I'm evil instead of a newbie, I took a 3 year break from CM, and that got me flagged as a 'new member' if you 'view new members' or 'view new members in your area'. As a result, I am again expeireincing the mail volume of a new member. 9 pages in the first 4 days. Several of these come with a warning attached to the top by CM, in big, bold red letters, that this person has been flagged by them as a potential spammer. I asked one of them flat out what he did to deserve that, and he said, oh, frickin CM, they just do that to you when you send out more than one letter a minute too many times. I'm like, really? One letter a minute? I have gotten the warning several more times, and I always write the person write away and tell them that I know what they got the warning for and I'm not impressed.

BTW, IrishMist, I think another thing we forget about being a newbie is the sheer volume and overwhelmingness. I have always answered every letter, even one answer to the very rude, in case they were just new and educatable - but suddenly my manners were stretched. 9 pages in 4 days! I think I have them all answered, but I'm not positive. And that's with a profile that says I'm here for the boards, not sure I want a master, and am not relocatable.

Lol, it's on the top of every email you receive:

ETA - Ah, I just reread and she is talking about the Spam alert - you must not receive mail from people who send more that one email per minute.

Whenready -> RE: Not everyone is real (4/5/2012 7:56:56 AM)

No idea if this helps or hinders - your mileage may vary and all that.

I have my search settings on the people list set to my preferences. As a result, I don't see 99% of the scammers. Age preferences is a factor here - I think.(OK I'm guessing the percentage). By chance or good fortune I get about 1 scam message every three months or so.

I'm sure most of the people on THIS board are "real" (ignoring the odd alt - and even the alt is an alt of someone real, however much of a troll or stirrer they're being). I'm also sure that everyone who responds to a message from me is real - and most of those who don't. Those whom I've met for coffee - and whose bellies I've poked - BOING - yep - she's real...... you get the idea. So far, it doesnt take very much conversation to work out who is and who isn't.... real aka interested/interesting. Good luck searching!

What's more important - the remote possibility of doing rude strangers a service or the reality of doing yourself a disservice?

tsatske -> RE: Not everyone is real (4/5/2012 8:17:15 AM)

I answer them because I would hate to not answer someone's letter. That's not who I am. I answer with the mirroring technique... I write back close to the amount they write to me, so If they say 'Hi', it only takes a minute to say Hi. I really don't believe that email manners are differant than snail mail manners, and I think letters should be answered. And it is one little thing that I like me better for - for being a tiny bit proper. I like that about me, and I'm not going to let a bunch of people, on a site I enjoy, change my view of myself that way. So I answer because it is who I am. I answer letters fro guys who say, 'On your knees now Bitch', because, most people don't, and, on rare occasions, they have been nice, very correctable, clueless gentleman who just needed someone to tell them - even here, you don't do that. If they persuits, then I block them. I don't use the filters cause I used to, then someone from this side, who happened to be across the pond, tried to write me just to chat, and I nearly missed it. I'm happy to wade through the junk mail for an occassional letter from a friend.

Nope, I don't. But every male sub knows that Dommes don't send more than one e-mail per minute. In fact, we highly doubt that most of them send more than one e-mail per year (if our in-boxes are any indication). [:D]

kalikshama -> RE: Not everyone is real (4/5/2012 8:40:35 AM)

Do you also answer the letters that come with the Spam warning?

tsatske -> RE: Not everyone is real (4/5/2012 9:10:52 AM)

Not necessarrily, or Just once, to tell them they are not impresssive with their spam warnings. There's no need to answer those, just like there's no need to answer junk mail. Sometimes I answer junkmail in my inbox, if it interests me, but usually I don't. Same with the spam letters. Some of them write really nice letters, longer and more thoughtful than other guys - of course they do, they get to use the same letter for 500 women. So I tell them, it's so not impressive, getting a spam. Not my idea of courtship. LOL

When I filled out my first profile, the only words I put in there were 'not interested in a realtionship, only here to read the message boards'.

When the mail started, I read all of them, but deleted them without answering because, as many have stated...not a single one of those men read a word of what I had put in my profile. As far as I was concerned, if they could ignore my stated wishes, I could be as rude as I wanted.

There were a few that asked me WHY, and for them, I explained. I still talk to quite a few of those men, both in person, online, on the phone...I even had one tell me after a year of being here that I needed to change my profile wording because I had lied lol. I had developed friendships...RELATIONSHIPS...something that I had stated I did not want.

Now a days, those who write me looking for a quick wank [;)], get the 'oh, goody, an idiot...let's play' attitude...which usually leaves THEM in a rage, and me in giggles. Through the years, I have learned the fine art of sarcasm and bitchery...and I use both to my best advantage.
Got to have fun with them ya' know lol.

For the most part, all I can say is that YOU are under no obligation to answer ANYONE. Even though you took a break, you have been around CM long enough to know that. If you are stating clearly that you are only here for the boards, then teach the fuck-wits a lesson in how to read. In other words...have fun with them [:D]

Endivius -> RE: Not everyone is real (4/5/2012 4:43:49 PM)

Ah...i've only met one person from CM in person, certainly, there are more I would enjoy having conversations with. Especially the more experienced folks who have been at this as long as i've been alive. Oh the questions I would ask....[:D]

littlewonder -> RE: Not everyone is real (4/5/2012 4:44:55 PM)

I think you're giving online wayyy too much energy. Yup, 99% online are not serious. Neither are the same percentage in real life from my experience but you have a better chance in real life I think because you're face to face with people more often. You can't get those same emotions and feelings from online that you get from real life.

So imo, stop giving online so much of your energy. Just laugh it off, delete, block, whatever. Don't respond. Why bother? It will only keep you wrapped up in the drama that will now be yours as well.

You'll find your online interactions much more easier and fun this way.

To that I would definitely add the Philippines. Their scams are more subtle though. Basically they seem to have a very mercenary attitude and are looking for someone to support them and their entire extended family. I live in SE Asia and have seen this almost daily. I see a t-shirt here that seems to sum up the Phillipino take on relationships. "No Money, No Honey." I have no doubt that there are Phillipinos that don't meet that description but I have yet to meet one.

Alecta -> RE: Not everyone is real (4/7/2012 1:41:06 PM)

I object strongly to men whose first handful of posts is a demand of whether anyone is "real". It is usually accompanied by some kind of rant about being solicited by people who want money. And is almost always indicative of the sort of guy who's looking for a quick thrill fulfilment without having to pay, emotionally or financially. Also, whiny. Yes, occasionally there are genuine lost souls, but as a general bias, my back goes up when the "is there anyone real on this site" line shows up and I find no reason not to listen to it :p
