Anaxagoras -> Jim Marshall died today (4/5/2012 11:37:06 AM)

Sad news today that Jim Marshall, who designed Marshall amps, has http://music.msn.com/music/article.aspx?news=716001 died. For those not very interested technically in this stuff, his amps were an iconic feature of rock from the late 1960’s onwards. People like Jimmi Page, Eric Clapton, Slash, Pete Townshend, and many more, used them. Pete Townshend was reputedly the first to use the big 100W dual cabinet speaker stacks circa 1965 after getting Marshall to build them. Marshall is most famously associated with Jimi Hendrix though. Hendrix used no less than three looped together to get the massive distortion driven sound he is famed for. They are important because they were a part of the process that led to radical changes in the sound of rock music from the 60’s onward – from a clean slightly anaemic sound to a distorted sound that had more impact, and helped give rise to genres like hard/heavy rock/metal which began to emerge around the same time.

Long live the 2204. Rest in peace, Jim.

I think I saw the model 2204 a few times. It's a 50 watt amp head I think.

It's an odd coincidence that he died on the company's 50th anniversary (the firm was established in 1962).

I think that man has co-contributed to many amazing musical memories for a lot of people. And a bit of deafness along the way.

Last saturday I went to hear a buddy's band play for a bike-run charity gig. Outdoors, nice day, singer/guitarist has a small tour bus; lounging around in the A/C whilst listening was good. My bud played my Aerodyne Strat (a fine machine, and sexy-looking as all get-out; shiny jet black, no pick guard, chrome bridge/tuners/whammy, new strings, all adjustments made except truss rod) through a Marshall 50 watt head with a 4x12 cabinet, a little compression, and my Hartmann NOS Vintage Germanium Fuzz. Sweet. Sounded very much like this: Sweet

Rest in peace, Jim.....you helped make a lot of beautiful music and beautiful memories for so many people

This is an interesting article on how the famous 100 watt Marshall stacks developed http://www.thewho.net/whotabs/gear/guitar/marshallstack.html - Townshend and John Entwistle would eventually go on to use different custom gear. I think Townshend came to prefer the cleaner archetypal "Fender" sound with his Hi-Watt amps.

Generally don't like naff novelty fridges but reckon this would be pretty cool for a man-cave! [:)]

It would look a lot better with decent beer in it.[8D]

True - if they wanted to stick with a US name they could have gone for a slightly less cheesy brand like Rolling Rock!

It would be extremely cool (excuse the pun) if it had actual jack plugs for the guitar - might be able to have a laugh at someone's expense: "hey man my guitar isn't working..." [;)]

He`ll have good company with Les Paul

LizDeluxe -> RE: Jim Marshall died today (4/7/2012 5:36:23 PM)

Les Paul, Seth Lover, Leo Fender and Jim Marshall.

Heaven's "Four Horsemen" of rock and roll.

This must be for people who like "COOL" music.......[8|]

Anaxagoras -> RE: Jim Marshall died today (4/7/2012 8:06:16 PM)

Never actually bought a Marshall unfortunately. Came very close to buying a second-hand JCM800 tube head once after I picked up a speaker cabinet going cheap. I changed my mind when I saw an old 1970's Orange OR120, which sounds somewhat like a Marshall. This was just as Orange were becoming fashionable again with the "Britpop" era. Probably should've gone for the JCM as the Orange was surprisingly fussy about the quality of guitars used with it, which was an issue at the time. [:o]

How sad.

He is in heaven with Les Paul and they are having the jam session with Jimi Hendrix and Randy Rhodes.

LadyRedRoseToo -> RE: Jim Marshall died today (4/8/2012 1:58:16 PM)
