Veteran foreign affairs reporter Seymour Hersh details the role played by the US in training Iranian MEK operatives in Nevade over the past few years.

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/newsdesk/2012/04/mek.html

The MEK, originally a Marxist group, is listed by the State Dept as a 'terrorist group'. It's aims include the overthrow of the current regime in Teheran. The MEK is widely believed to be responsible for the recent assassinations of several Iranian nuclear scientists, in operations carried out jointly with Israel's Mossad.

Does US support and training for a group it has listed as 'terrorist' compromise the 'War on Terror"? What other implications flow from this revelation?

Real0ne -> RE: US training terrorists in Nevada (4/8/2012 1:29:58 AM)

the aristocracy and those connected are well known terrorists

The Opium Wars, also known as the Anglo-Chinese Wars, divided into the First Opium War from 1839 to 1842 and the Second Opium War from 1856 to 1860, were the climax of disputes over trade and diplomatic relations between China under the Qing Dynasty and the British Empire.

After the inauguration of the Canton System in 1756, which restricted trade to one port and did not allow foreign entrance to China, the British East India Company faced a trade imbalance in favour of China and invested heavily in opium production to redress the balance. British and United States merchants brought opium from the British East India Company's factories in Patna and Benares,[1] in the Bengal Presidency of British India, to the coast of China, where they sold it to Chinese smugglers who distributed the drug in defiance of Chinese laws. Aware both of the drain of silver and the growing numbers of addicts, the Daoguang Emperor demanded action. Officials at the court, who advocated legalization of the trade in order to tax it were defeated by those who advocated suppression. In 1838, the Emperor sent Lin Zexu to Guangzhou where he quickly arrested Chinese opium dealers and summarily demanded that foreign firms turn over their stocks. When they refused, Lin stopped trade altogether and placed the foreign residents under virtual siege, eventually forcing the merchants to surrender their opium to be destroyed. In response, the British government sent expeditionary forces from India which ravaged the Chinese coast and dictated the terms of settlement. The Treaty of Nanking not only opened the way for further opium trade, but ceded territory including Hong Kong, unilaterally fixed Chinese tariffs at a low rate, granted extraterritorial rights to foreigners in China which were not offered to Chinese abroad, a most favored nation clause, as well as diplomatic representation. When the court still refused to accept foreign ambassadors and obstructed the trade clauses of the treaties, disputes over the treatment of British merchants in Chinese ports and on the seas led to the Second Opium War and the Treaty of Tientsin.[2]

These treaties, soon followed by similar arrangements with the United States and France, later became known as the Unequal Treaties and the Opium Wars as the start of China's "Century of humiliation."

its all about money power and control of those on top.

There have been two or more threads here already on this:

The state dept. has known about the PMOI/MEK and anything they've been involved in since at least 1981. They are the largest opposition group to the Islamist theocracy in Iran. When the somewhat more friendly-to-US president Khatami was elected in 1997 he requested that the US put PMOI/MEK on the foreign terrorist organizations (FTO) list and the state dept. complied. Every time the designation has come up for review as required by law Iran asks for renewal and the state dept. complies. They were on the European list at one time but were removed in 2008.

That's how they got on the terrorist list. Not from any overt or implied or in any way perceived threat to the US or its interests, but because Khatami 'requested' it in return for toning down Iranian antagonism in 1997.

Seymour Hersh is a known fount of disinformation and obfuscation, and decoy tosser by everyone who keeps up with 'deep-op' type subjects and by everyone in the background or underground left. He is well known as a tool of the CIA. His thoroughly discredited book The Dark Side Of Camelot, aside containing numerous documented falsehoods and fake Kennedy signature on documents, does not even mention JFK's only real g/f Mary Pinchot Meyer (CIA officer Cord Meyer's ex) among his several liaisons. That would be the dead giveaway there.

Read the links in the two previous threads to gain more information about this confusing situation.

So terrorists are cool as long as they are 'our' terrorists?

Moonhead -> RE: US training terrorists in Nevada (4/8/2012 5:55:46 AM)

If they're "your" terrorists, then they're freedom fighters, not terrorists.

So you didn't read any of the articles, then.

It wouldn't really matter either way Edwynn...

PS

Either that or she thinks it's cool to have another country's theocracy government tell your government's foreign ministry who to put on its terrorist list.

Edwynn -> RE: US training terrorists in Nevada (4/8/2012 9:23:21 AM)

I just find the whole thing a bit confusing, myself, so I cannot understand someone just jumping full guns on one side or the other. One item of confusion is that PMOI/MEK has been on the State Dept.'s FTO list since 1997, at the behest of the Iranian government, but just now it's become all suddenly a big deal, with all these recent articles about the group and their US advocates. Why just now?

Another item is why the National Iranian American Council, an unregistered foreign lobby and MEK rival ex-pat group, has members working directly in the US State Dept. Though perhaps that might give some clue to the recent otherwise perplexing sudden interest in PMOI/MEK in selected media.

As stated in the previous threads, there is some sort of power struggle going on internally among high powered US players even aside from the two ex-pat groups' rivalry. Not the sort of people whose words I'd put the most trust in, either side of it, and especially not from a puppet for one of the sides, Seymour Hersh.

Point well taken but I can understand some that have a particular hatred for the West jumping on one side - in an argument some time ago I posted a link to an article on the ME Forum. One of the men behind the site wrote an article years ago supporting the MEK. Therefore Tweak started screaming about me supporting "terrorists". Well... [:D]

SoftBonds -> RE: US training terrorists in Nevada (4/8/2012 10:29:45 AM)

Meh, not really news, Reagan funded a terrorist called Bin Ladin at one point... Doubt that guy ever did anything to the US like crash planes into our building though, right???

It's because they've been accused of assisting Mossad in killing some Iranian nuclear scientsts.

Moonhead -> RE: US training terrorists in Nevada (4/8/2012 1:34:51 PM)

I think it's more because a fair chunk of the middle east (definitely all of the nutcase theocracy element there) thinks that America is Israel's bitch, so obviously whatever MOSSAD does is you chaps' fault. Syria, in particular, has never forgiven you for the fact that your provided the hardware that stopped them and their mates in Egypt wiping Israel off the map during the six days war.
