Yesterday, when bemoaning how my knee pain makes exercise difficult, my sister suggested My Fitness Pal. I've never lost weight by diet alone, but for her this component has always been her main focus. She's previously been successful using Weight Watchers to lose pregnancy weight gain, but is now using My Fitness Pal, which she says is easier than WW and is also free.

I signed up today with a goal of losing 2# per week. I added breakfast and an anticipated snack, and am already 6 g over my fat calories for the day.

Guess I need to rethink all that oil I use to saute veggies for breakfast!

Last summer when we had collards, I simmered them in a small amount of water, then added salsa, then poached an egg in the center of the pan, and served with quinoa. I added this to tomorrow's breakfast and found that this would half the calories and fat of today's.

I've always known that food diaries are a great way to bring awareness and accountability to one's diet, but always found them a PITA. I think MFP is easy enough that I can stick to it though.

MFP also helps you make sure you get enough water, fruits, and veggies.

i too have a profile at MFP. was on for a while, off for a while... and now i am back again!

i lost all of my excess weight the first time, now after dealing with a lengthy illness i am back and it is already helping me too. i am frequently guilty of a taste of this and a snack of that and boy does it add up fast.

One thing i love about MyFitnessPal is the database. Absolutely vast and easy to add to as well. And now the iPhone app even has a barcode scanner! Boop! and it enters all of my serving sizes for every ingredient. Easy Peasy!

Now i am just more careful about actually measuring my portions and keep a food scale on the counter so i can be consistent. i will be back on track in no time.

Good Luck in your progress!

I'm now questioning the accuracy after entering my food and exercise plan from the time when I lost 40# and finding that it shows me as over by almost 900 calories and 60 g of fat per day.

I guess I could enter my typical eating these days and adjust my weekly weight loss goals so that I'm shooting for 500-1000 less calories per day. If "Remaining" is always in the red, that won't work for me.

Thanks! You too!

i shoot for 1 pound of loss a week and concentrate on getting a high fiber diet ( about 20-30g a day). So i am feeling fuller and stuff is kinda cleaning my system out. The first couple of weeks jump start with a lot of weight lost.

Also, i wear one of those arm bands that works as a pedometer and tells me how many actual calories i burn a day... Now i know i burn about 1850 calories, and i want a deficit of about 500... so i plan to eat, or make myself eat about 1200 to 1360 calories a day. The arm band is taking out a lot of the guess work for me!

That being said... i also have one cheat meal a week where i have whatever i am craving (all things in moderation!), and i enter it into my diary... but i dont stress that i went over for that one day... because i know i will still have a deficit by the weeks end!

I use fitnesspal on my iphone. It helps me to keep track of calories, what I'm eating, exercise, etc.... I highly recommend it.

Ya, my sister showed it to me from her iPhone. I believe the app also allows you to scan barcodes (but maybe that's coming soon, as I couldn't find info on that just now) but so far everything, no matter how obscure such as my fish oil, has been in the database.
