Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich may not appear on the ballot for the June 26 Utah primary, after a $500 check - the required filing fee - bounced, an official said.

State election director Mark Thomas told ABC News that a $500 check given by the Gingrich campaign to secure his place on the Utah ballot bounced on March 27.
"Our office immediately attempted to contact the campaign and the designated agent but no phone calls were returned," Thomas said. "We also asked the state Republican Party to assist us, but they also could not get into communication with them, although I do not know how they attempted to contact them."

One source close to the campaign told ABC News that the Gingrich campaign recently changed finance and accounting staff. The designated agent who filed the paperwork for the campaign was Wallace Woodruff "Woody" Hales, though Hales still works for the Gingrich campaign.

And that, ladies and gentleman, is why cutting revenue doesn't magically create funds.

He wants to be President. Can't get on ballots, can't manage a campaign... unbelievable.

He doesn't REALLY want to be President. He just enjoys having other people pay for his First Class travel and accommodations.

Its incredible that those who were preaching at Obama about fiscal responsibility bounce a 500 dollar check.

Actually, he needs the publicity to keep his scams working. Before this election, he was "running," for president before, but not making the cut. It gave him the political standing and goodwill to sell stuff to morons.
Folks started to wonder why he was never getting noticed, so he decided he had to at least pretend to run a real campaign, but now that Santorum is out, Newt has "proven," that he's a presidential contender. All he is waiting for now is confirmation that he will be able to speak at the convention...

Deadbeat space clown Newt Gingrich is a vocal proponent of "fiscal responsibility," fondly evoking the days when budgets were balanced and Gingrich was relevant. Unfortunately, when it comes to the finances of his own campaign, Gingrich takes his fiduciary promises as seriously as he takes his marital vows…

Utah Elections Director Mark Thomas said a designated agent for the Gingrich campaign brought the filing papers and a check for $500 in March, but after the check was deposited, the state was notified by the bank that the check had bounced. He said the office has tried to contact the Gingrich campaign through the telephone number and email provided on the application, but have not received a response.

Recently, the state sent a certified letter to the campaign, stating that if the fee isn't paid by April 20, Gingrich will be disqualified and will not be on the ballot.

It's true Gingrich has had a run of bad financial luck. First, his think tank declared bankruptcy. Now his campaign has moved from figuratively writing checks it can't cash to literally writing checks it can't cash. It has piled up nearly $4.5 million in debt. But like a Gingrich marriage, this situation is only temporary.

While the Republican Party may have abandoned him, in a fit of poetic justice, for a younger and wealthier man, Gingrich still has his looks. Not a good look, mind you. But a look. For now, he's charging $50 at campaign events for a picture with him, but think of how much money he'll make when he travels the country demanding cash for not appearing in your photographs.

Actually, re-thinking this, I think it is fiscally responsible. Why pay $500 to run against a Mormon in Utah?
