I don't like guns, any post involving guns will usually get a post or three from me against them but it's clearly a cultural thing ie Americans are generally more pro gun than the UK and most other countries too.
So here is an unlikely scenario or two. It can be quite useful to take ideas to extremes sometimes to see how they pan out.
Lets imagine that we could live in a world with no guns at all for civilians. Army and cops, fine, I don't have a problem with that but no guns at all for us ordinary joes. Would the world be a safer place or more dangerous? Maybe knife crime would soar, or assaults with bats, crowbars etc would go up.
I am fairly sure there would be fewer people actually killed, one small twitch of your finger is a lot easier and quicker than standing over someone battering them with a frying pan.
It would make the cops lives a hell of a lot easier too if they knew they were the only people out there with guns, basically when a cop said stop, you would stop pretty damn quick.

The other side of the coin, everyone has a gun, it's the law. We would probably exclude people with criminal records and people with mental health problems but every ordinary joe has to have and carry a gun
. Safer or more dangerous?
The answer seems obvious to me but a friend of mine once said that the safest car you could buy would be one made of glass with a big glass spike sticking out of the steering wheel straight towards your chest. No one would get out of line or speed, everyone would drive really safely. Maybe the same thing would happen if everyone carried, people would be a lot more considerate and careful as they knew the guy or girl they were about to piss off had a gun.
What do you think?

D C banned guns, while the percentage of crimes dropped dramatically they quickly became the murder capital of the U S. With a gun ban women and middle aged men would be defenseless against thugs see Edinborough (sp). At sixty I am more than a match for a 18 year old punk if we both have guns. Hand to hand or with hand held weapons I am up the creek.

Imo,.. its not so much about guns, its about the culture that is the difference between the US & the UK and Canada... its like night and day.. In the US, Dirty Harry is celebrated.. bang, bang, bang.. shoot first, ask questions later.. where as in the UK & Canada... you had Steel and Emma Peel.. all Steed had to do was fling his trusty steel lined hat at the bad guy like he was tossing a frisbee and knock that bad guy out cold.. all Emma had to do was a few karate chops and the world was saved once again.. just in time for tea..

In Switzerland, every male citizen of age within certain guidelines must own a gun and have it checked by the police yearly to see if it's in working order.

However, these are not hand guns. They are rifles. So if you're out walking the dog and carrying it, you will be noticed and questioned. You don't go chamois hunting in downtown Geneva.

We should trust ourselves that we have enough self-control ability to use guns...lol maybe you couldn't, but I can. I love guns since the Army life.

Here in these United States, the majority of LEGAL gun owners are shooters and hunters who have rifles and the like. What would you do, exactly, to be sure that only the police and suchlike had guns? Do you sincerely think that the world would be safer without them?

I've seen you go on your anti-gun rants, Hardy, and while I understand the cultural differences to a degree, I think that you must live in a wonderful world where everyone is safe and no one harms anyone. Or is it okay to say, go all romper stomper on someone and take their gear as long as you don't use a firearm?

I think the murder rate would drop in a society with no guns, as its more complicated to poison someone to death, and more arduous to kill another hand-to-hand.

If you take away the gang and drug related killings, ARE there that many gun related murders? I am not being disingenuous, I am really wondering. Back in the day when Detroit was the murder capital of the country, the majority of the murders were drug dealers killing each other. Citizens weren't wandering the streets shooting randomly, or getting ultracranky at the drive-through window.

And really, it is not all that hard to bludgeon someone to death. True aggression will find an outlet.

Same thing in DC. Important caveat, though: Innocent people did get caught in the cross-fire. One, I keenly remember, was a little girl who went to my church.

Yes, there were citizens killed here, too. Lots of them kids who worked as mules because hey! cash!

Thug life has been so glamorized. I would dearly love to eradicate all of that.

You can outlaw guns all you want but if someone wants one they'll find a way to get it. Or another weapon will be made to replace a gun that works just as well as a gun. Killings and violence will continue as long as we have life on this planet.

yes but doesnt that originate from the World Wars that all men were required to be armed to defend Switzerland from potential invasion? That is what i understood the reason for that was.. which imo is a totally legit and understandable..

Gun laws only affect law-abiding citizens. For those who plan on breaking the law anyway, they will find a way to get a gun, whether or not it is illegal.

I hope I am not coming off as some kind of gun toting wild woman... I don't own any guns, and don't expect I ever will. My dad might still have an old cowboy pistol (from the 1870's) that needs a new firing pin. We DO have BB guns for target shooting. If you see me at a House Asha party... the yellow BB's belong to MY airsoft! Gird your loins! Otherwise, if I am going to hunt or shoot, I will borrow from a friend. There is no need or place in MY life for firearms.

Our civil rights have become so eroded here since the terrorist attacks... when people come in from other cultures and tell us that we are not allowed to defend ourselves in our own homes if we so choose, I am bewildered. What else are citizens expected to give up? Because laws that control the use of handguns ARE in place. If a citizen wants one, he or she has to jump through whatever hoops are in place for that state or county. If that person is a felon, they're not going to LEGALLY own a handgun.

That's my point, really. That truism about only outlaws having guns when guns are outlawed? Pretty much the truth.

Gun laws are good, but really have no bearing on killers. For instance, guns are stolen all the time, resold, brought into the country, etc. They end up in the wrong hands all the time. However, the people who abide by gun laws shouldn't have to suffer for ignorance. I am someone who strongly believes that if My home or business or family is being threatened, I will use any means to protect them. It was just recently passed that the gun owner, protecting his or her family would have no problems if this should occur. Maybe it's because I'm southern and we pride ourselves on being members of NRA and having a vast collection of heavy firepower; but I will always be in favor of Americans (who are responsible) owning guns.
