I don't see it so much as a fail as an attempt by those that made the show to not show bdsm as either good or bad. Yes, this man is bad, but they did not say that any or all actions having to do with bdsm are. They did at least go out of their way to say that what happened with this person may have started out as a game but was turned into something much worse. They did not say it was her fault or that this is what always happens, though many of us do know it does happen often enough that people should be warned about it. As a personal judgement of the show I see nothing wrong here. As someone that has for many years taken part in WIITWD I would, honestly, much rather people be warned about the bad things that can happen then know nothing at all and perhaps fall victim to them themselves.
*As a side note* I do think they did a wonderful job of showing how strong this woman was when she was faced with a situation she had no control over. It gives hope that others can find the same kind of strength when faced with what they believe to be insumountable odds.
