how do you prep it for painting? it's not splintery or in bad condition or nothing, untill you get to the bottom, ,there's some kind of damage where it looked like the wood split from expanding an shrinking a bit and there's a small gouge on the edge.

If the face of the door has been veneered, there won't be much you can do about the damage at the bottom. To prep for painting use a 120 grit sandpaper on the whole surface. Assuming the door already has some paint on it, the paper will likely clog up fast. You can clean it out with a wire brush or just grab a fresh piece of sandpaper. It is not necessary to get down to bare wood. All you are doing is creating a better bonding surface. Wipe it down with clear water and allow it to dry.

Then apply a generous coat of an exterior primer. Then TWO coats of whatever color you choose in an exterior paint. DO NOT use an all-in-one paint and primer. Follow the directions on the paint can for time between coats of paint. Use a GOOD quality brush to apply the paints it's worth the extra two or three bucks for a better brush..

prep it by sanding down so you have a bare surface unless the paint is in excellent condition with no splintering or peeling but that's rarely not the case. Then make sure you have the correct kind of paint that will hold up to outdoor conditions. Also make sure you have the correct brushes or rollers.

I don't think it's veneered, it feels like it just had a crappy brown coat of paint thrown onto it ages ago.

Without looking at it. . . in general, wood putty, wood glue, clamps, and sandpaper.

Depending on what kind of paint it is, I have used a heat pistol (not sure what the technical term for it is) the paint then throws up big bubbles and you just go over it with a putty knife or a scraper, cleans off most of it and will reduce the danger of carpal tunnel a lot. If you got a friend who's got an electric sander, try and borrow that. As to repairing the damage, depends really how bad it is, that should determine which method you use.

We call them "Heat Guns" on this side of the pond.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=heat+guns

You might even be able to rent one.

You can also get electric sanders for not too much. I think that I got mine on sale for around ten dollars.

Yellow pages.....

Wait....

Knock.....

"Thank you....when can I have it back?"

(Problem solved).

I brought my heat gun into the relationship, my other half brought the electric sander - between us and our power tools we could possibly outfit a small building site, I leave everything electric to him but wood work is my domain

My dad's got all the tools i should need, minius probably the heat gun, there's a great benefit to having a parent who likes to wood work and has tons of tools hehe. I am welcome to borrow his tools any time i want, as long as i return them and respect them.

I was thinking that Topping could rent any needed tools.

I'm not sure how these holes got there, this is a very old door, and it came with the house, in our workshop, and my dad took it out of there and put it on here when he needed a door.

And that's basically the door.

Where the split is, it looks veneered. If the veneer is still well attached to the solid wood, I would just put some wood filler in and sand it smooth. The rest looks like it has some sort of old varnish (could be the brown paint) as long as you've a clean, sanded surface, the new paint should adhere just fine.

That looks like a thin sheet of wood veneer over particle board. It's not worth the money to invest tons of tools or materials in refinishing it, JMO.

Some wood putty and a putty knife will suffice to fill in the holes and imperfections.

Sand well, as instructed above.

Primer and paint, as instructed above. And I repeat the advice about a good paint brush. I would be very surprised if your dad does not have one.

1- Wood glue... after you mix it with some water.
or
2- you have to bring some "Splint" kind of matterial.. I dont know what its called in English..
& some nails.. here & there & let it to dry for (1- a day- 2- 30 minutes).

after that.. you may want to (make the surface smooth) by (glass papaer).. use the 0.5 mm thick or 0.25mm.
be carefull not to harm yourself in any of ther parts above..
after the glass paper..
just paint.. althou I do recommend (Lacquer) for wood.. its more Fancy..
