Not trying to diminish your grief, but maybe it will help you to consider how he was and that he might not have wanted you to see him in the state he's in now? For any smart person losing their mind must be the worst nightmare ever. If it would happen to me, I'd actually prefer that my loved ones wouldn't come to see me, because it would hurt me more... So maybe the geographical distance is a blessing? And yes, your mom is lucky that he recognized her for so long, a friend of mine went through that with his father and he got very violent because he didn't recognize his own family. He said it was so difficult to remember the loving father he knew as a child when he saw this violent wreck of a person. Dementia and Alzheimer's is not only cruel for the person it happens to, but also for their care takers and loved ones.
