I'm considering getting a few. I may grow them in pots, i was told they could do well like that, but my dad has had them before and they all died, but he's not very good at taking care of his plants.

Hibiscus are fairly easy to grow but you have to remember they are a tropical plant. They won't survive outside in cold/freezing weather. Your best bet is to grow them in large pots and move them inside to a very sunny window for the winter.

They need to be in a large pot with good drainage and good soil (I recommend Miracle Grow). They need to get full on sun for several hours a day and they need a lot of water - daily if it's hot, every other day if it's a bit cooler. Deer will definitely eat them if they can get anywhere near them.

Make sure you let the flowers drop off naturally and do NOT pinch the buds back or they won't reflower.

I can grow hibiscus here but not sure what the hardiness zone is for Sacramento...here is a good link! My only problem here is the white flies...that happens usually when we get Santa Ana Winds..hot dry weather...since they are a tropical plant I might say no they are not good there...

http://www.ehow.com/info_8616637_temperature-zone-hibiscus.html

PS..if you can grow a plant in the ground rather than a pot it always does better....

The nursery lady did say they did ok in Sacramento, but they're sensitive to cold and drought. which is understandable. i just really don't wanna spend the $$$ for something that may just croak soon after.

The thing to remember about plants in pots is that you have to be extremely diligent about watering them as they dry out much quicker.

Ours didn't do very well inside over the winter but this was in Massachusetts - how cold do your winters get for how long?

Also, I didn't know that they should be severely pruned before bringing in to reduce bugs.

See http://www.trop-hibiscus.com/gindr.html for hardy hibiscus and other tips.

Mine did fine here in SE Michigan in the warm months, and inside in the summer but they did get these little white parasitic bugs. Also they did need water and light, as plants will. I bought a double flower one that dad didnt like, so he accidentally on purpose put it where the deer were sure to find it.

I always keep a couple out on my patio in the summer because if treated properly they are prolific bloomers. I tend to treat them like annuals though - after the first frost, into the compost pile with them.

If you don't live in a tropical environment, that's usually best. There was one in an office I used to work in that was potted, literally six feet talll and ten feet around! Amazing.

If wintered properly aren't they supposed to come back again and again every year?

The problem with Sacramento and Hibiscus is that your are bringing a subtropical flower into a desert climate. Get an automatic watering system if you want any success and spritz it with water for the humidity at least once a day.

Trivia moment, back when Sam Clemens was writing from Angel's Camp he described how a squirrel could go from Angel's Camp to San Francisco Bay without having to touch the ground for all the trees. These days it is noting but cheat grass and irrigated farmland. Nothing grows without irrigation. Woodlands turned to desert.

In theory, yes. But for me personally - I will have a LOT of patio pots once mid-May rolls around, and there's just too many to bring into the house over the winter as I also have some houseplants and not a lot of natural light in the house.

Summer plants are lovely.....enjoy them, then compost them when it's no longer practical to keep them. This year, mine looked great all the way until we got a snowstorm at the end of October.

I personally do not see the point in paying good money for a plant and then killing it once winter comes along, but that's just me, and i do not have lots of plants that need going inside or protecting. So this one plant would have plenty of room lol.

In theory but:

http://www.trop-hibiscus.com/gindr.html

Realize that many times, hibiscus never bloom well again after the 1st winter inside. There is not much you can do about this. It appears that the generic grocery store, Costco, Home Depot, etc., hibiscus tend to not bloom well again after the 1st season. The new large flowered hybrids seem to perform much better year after year. This is an observation based on my experiences over wintering hibiscus. Your hibiscus experience may vary.

Might want to ask at a garden center (as opposed to Home Depot, etc.)

It's the same principle as planting annuals in your garden. Lovely to look at, beautify your planting beds, and then when the season is over, they're compost. Hibiscus fall into the annuals category as far as I'm concerned. I do have jade plants, pothos, and lots of other plants that do stick around quite a bit longer - but again, when they get past their prime, they're compost.

I'm not someone who feels the need to hold on to everything I ever get. If you're someone who has trouble getting rid of things - I wouldn't get started on plants with the hopes that they'll be beautiful year after year. They often are not.

There is a beautiful hibiscus tree here in Barcelona, growing against a building. The reason it survives outside is that we have mild winters here, and don´t get frost. I used to have an indoor one that lasted several years.
