hangemhigh1953 -> Energy? (4/19/2012 4:55:27 PM)

I see this topic come up often in the local scene and it seems like it is seen as a central belief of BDSM. However, I rarely if ever see it discussed around here so I'm bringing it up now. What is energy? Do you believe in energy? What should someone like myself who identifies as a PEARList (no spiritual beliefs) do when faced with a discussion about energy in the local scene, when it's seen as essentially fact? (i.e. should I express my beliefs or keep the peace by staying in the closet?)

Alecta -> RE: Energy? (4/19/2012 5:19:52 PM)

Energy, as a word, is also used as merely a simple synonym for "atmosphere". When people talk about "the energy in a room", that's usually what they mean. It's a reflection on how it feels in the room... not a spiritual discussion.

hangemhigh1953 -> RE: Energy? (4/19/2012 5:41:53 PM)

The experience I've had with it is that it's referring to some sort of life force (like Chi or something) and is occasionally discussed in its relation to chakras. People list things like "energy play" and "energy manipulation" as their fetishes and a local dungeon even did a class on it that included things like sage rubbings and "cleansings". It is a very spiritual thing.

Alecta -> RE: Energy? (4/19/2012 5:54:59 PM)

Yea, but that's not the same thing as "the energy in the room", which is the most common BDSM usage.

It's like how the words "dominant personality" could mean "the personality that's most prominent", or "the personality of a Dom/me", depending on context.

The "energy" you're talking about is a holistic belief not directly related to BDSM. It's something related more to your local area I suspect, and not at all exclusive to the BDSM community.

Treat it as you would any other religious subject. But try not to get it confused with when people are trying to tell you how they're feeling or how the party's going.

VioletViolence -> RE: Energy? (4/19/2012 6:02:27 PM)

There are many in the BDSM world who believe that the human body has an energy field that can be manipulated and used in play. If that's not your cup of tea, then just say so! Politely and with tact of course, but just like with everything else in life, you don't always have to agree with those around you. Just do your thing and find people who want to do those things with you.

Alecta -> RE: Energy? (4/19/2012 6:14:43 PM)

All I'm saying is that is not something that is BDSM-centric, nor central to BDSM, and that it's more likely the OP's confusing regular use of the word with specific reference to the ideology.

Side-note on the science, the human body does generate a subtle energy field, that part is a fact.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Energy? (4/19/2012 6:21:54 PM)

They are talking about something like chi. Energy work is by no means bdsm centric. It's a new fashion, seemingly, and can enhance play for those who are cognizant of it. It's just a thing, and NOT a spiritual thing. Take it or leave it.

ProlificNeeds -> RE: Energy? (4/19/2012 7:13:06 PM)

FR~

I don't really put any stock in anything that's not tactile and immediately either cause or effect of actions. To me 'energy' is either the shit in a lightbulb, or how much 'go power' I have left before I sit down and refuse to move.
I've never actually encountered anyone in real life who put any sort of spiritual context to BDSM, it's just kinky fun.

Well, energy is the interaction between stasis and friction.

Better explained by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy (which I'm not actually qualified for).

You can best read about it above.

artemiss -> RE: Energy? (4/19/2012 11:22:04 PM)

Do you not believe your mood affects those around you?  The way you look, the way you sound, the way you feel, etc., are all a reflection of you emotional state.  Some people choose to see these as spiritual representations of someone state, others simply see it as biological indicators of an emotional state.  Regardless of how one views it, by being more aware and receptive to the cues of others, you can tap more into their "energy".

It only has religious connotations if you choose to attach such.

SoulAlloy -> RE: Energy? (4/19/2012 11:39:27 PM)

I've always treated pain as an energy that can be manipulated with enough focus, is that the kind of energy you mean?

I've heard of the philosophy of power exchange as well, which can be described as an energy

FrostedFlake -> RE: Energy? (4/20/2012 4:31:25 AM)

Two thoughts to throw on the fire.

Energy could be a different way to say, 'chemistry'. If she says she likes his energy, that's what it is.

Chi is not religion, it is medicine. Energies flow naturally through certain paths. These paths are either open or not, and that can be changed. Doubt? Look into it. It won't take long to see what I mean. The ideal source? Probably a very good martial arts instructor.

I hope that helps, some.

Best.

ProlificNeeds -> RE: Energy? (4/20/2012 5:24:40 AM)

Alternative medicine at best. They certainly don't perscribe chi-awareness in hospitals here.

MsSylverdawn -> RE: Energy? (4/20/2012 5:31:38 AM)

Ive always talked about TPE... total power exchange as the energic dynamic btwn a D and an s, a T and b ... or a M and an s.. Its that almost tactile flow of charged chemistry, understanding, syngergy btwn two who are into each other in the connection btwn them. For me thats what bdsm energy is.. it can charge a room it can affect others.

Ma'am.

Grandmaster Yun is an MD in Oriental Medicine. And the highest ranked Black Belt on this side of the Pacific. On the other side of the Pacific, Chi Gong is mainstream. There, it is the Western idea of trying to treat the disease instead of the patient that is considered suspect.

Not to be snotty or anything like that, but, there might be an opportunity for you here.

Don't offer to do "energy play" with people. Skip the class with the burning sage. Even in California, I sincerely doubt that energy work woo is a pervasive as you might think. "Energy" means a lot of other things in a BDSM context, too.

I see no harm in expressing your opinions if asked about it, but I would be hesitant to start a conversation about it unless there is some tangible benefit to you. Even as an agnostic, I find that atheist-leaning folks who want to argue about spirituality come off as abrasive. You will probably be accused of stirring up drama, and it is unlikely that you will actually change what other people believe.

Wow! Energy work and spiritual influence are what turn tepid scenes into mind-blowing tornados. Incorporating Tantra and Sex Magick add so many dimensions to BDSM.

A couple of books to get started:

"Urban Aboriginals" by Geoff Mains
"Radical Ecstasy" by Easton and Hardy
"Energy Work" by Robert Bruce
"Art of Sexual Magic" by M. Anand

"energy manipulation"

Energy play and energy manipulation are both little-used terms that are more often applied to things outside BDSM. I wouldn't say that either of these things are commonly brought up by most people who engage BDSM, let alone being a central belief of BDSM.

You may have stumbled onto one small group of people who are fascinated with this topic, but I have a hard time believing that you frequently go to different events, with different people, and find this topic brought up all the time. Pearlist, more often than not, is used as a synynonym for atheist. There's a good number of those among the BDSM set, so, again, I have a hard time believing that being an atheist or pearlist would do little more than cause most people to yawn.

We have classes on spirituality in BDSM, Tantra and Sex Magick quite often in the Bay Area. There was one earlier this month at the Citadel.

Just because you don't understand something, don't dismiss it's important or level of practice. That would be foolish to do so.

Ilayda -> RE: Energy? (4/22/2012 8:13:05 PM)

I'm not sure this is a "central" theme of BDSM in that I'm not convinced it's prevalent overall (I've certainly not seen much of it in my local scene). That said, I see a lot of potential for energy/chakra work in scenes, particularly for a more "sensual" top.

As far as discussing it, I say - why not? Just don't try to force skeptics to believe you or get offended if they don't.
