Karmastic -> Afraid to click links? (4/20/2012 3:49:50 PM)

diff thread, all this brouhaha over clicking some guy's link. not getting into all that, but do want to make sure you know there's a way to safely click on any link.

yep, this is a safety primer...

browser recommendation. get firefox, it's free:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/

since so many more people use internet explorer, firefox is much less prone to viruses and such. and it has a ton of useful add-ons...

go here and download the no-script add-on. when u click on a link, all possibly destructive javascript code is disabled by default. if u trust a page, THEN u can click to allow java.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/?src=hp-dl-featured

tons of other useful addons here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/

i also suggest these free useful tools:

* spywareblaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
passive protection (no scans) - blocks Spyware, adware, browser hijackers, and dialers. download new signatures every month.

* spybot s&d
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
both passive protection, and has scanner. download new signatures every month.

* winpatrol
www.winpatrol.com/
passive protection for many types of system changes, alerts you or not.

* TOR - for those of you who like to surf anonymously, TOR is a must:
https://www.torproject.org/
concept: slower cus it routes through a series of anonymous servers that hides where u are. you simply open it like any other browser. no worries if you already have Firefox installed - it uses a copy of FireFox that can run alongside your regular firefox.

Cool info thanks. Is TOR something like a proxy?

yw, yes, it's same concept, but no futzing around. just open the special tor browser and it opens a connection to a random proxy. u can switch proxy with a click.

edit: but it's also an onion router, more than just proxy.

If I am afraid to click a link, why would I click a link some dude on the internet told me to click so I wouldn't have to be afraid of clicking links?

I really like Avast as a free anti-virus program.

MissImmortalPain -> RE: Afraid to click links? (4/20/2012 7:05:36 PM)

This is a nice suggestion if people are overly worried about links....BUT...You should point out that it is not recommened to run Firefox and Explorer tandum as it can cause issues with things not working and can cause older computers to crash. I would also add that spybot will drop more malware in a computer then the average person wants to put up with. It is considered by many techs to be just as bad as a virus.

FrostedFlake -> RE: Afraid to click links? (4/20/2012 7:11:27 PM)

What 'worried' me was the 'ickyness'. And since the guy wanted folks to 'be mean to him', I was. I told him I didn't click the link.

If my computer gets sick and I can't cure it, I can wipe it slick and stack my house of cards anew. It's not hard. Just time consuming.

TNDommeK -> RE: Afraid to click links? (4/20/2012 7:52:29 PM)

Tor is fun for trolling.

Just saying.

good points

and always have more than 1 layer, meaning, use spybot as well as others

MissImmortalPain -> RE: Afraid to click links? (4/21/2012 4:28:49 AM)

Actually in many cases running more than one anti vi or malware checker can cause them to not work. I still wouldn't use spybot if you paid me to do it [:D]

sunshinemiss -> RE: Afraid to click links? (4/21/2012 5:17:43 AM)

Just as an aside... I'm not sure how many people (besides me doh) have this issue. I don't click links because the Censorship Police often send me little love notes warning me not to go there. I don't really need to be deported because I clicked on the link that was put up by some dude I don't know from a can of paint.

Just to mention on that in Internet Explorer (version 8 at least), after it is installed one needs to set up and configure Java or one of those annoying messages appears when visiting certain websites that require it.

One of the Java options is to allow other parties access it (the script I presume). I deselected it as it seemed a bit dubious, and none of the functionality seems to have been lost. Sorry for the vagueness but am working from memory here.

correct, never run more than 1 virus protection program at one time, they can conflict.

that's not an issue with passive tools such as spybot. certainly, no passive tool will be worse than nothing at all, unless it's a scam. spybot is very well accepted and is not a scam. would be interested to find out where you learned it's not a good thing.
