Not likely, as far as I know. I believe ants and Foxglove have a friendly working relationship with each other, as I've seen them favorite the plant before. As I remember, ants have the same fondness for Peonies. Digitalis is made from Foxglove plant, and is powerful in its own right.

Not exactly. But there is a good chance that the ants are there because of aphids, and aphids will harm plants.

If you don't have aphids, then the ants will help keep pests away from your foxglove.

Just be sure to keep your dog away from the plant as it would be deadly if ingested.

I think Foxglove can take care of itself.

quote:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digitalis_purpurea
Due to the presence of the cardiac glycoside digitoxin, the leaves, flowers and seeds of this plant are all poisonous to humans and some animals and can be fatal if eaten.
Extracted from the leaves, this same compound, whose clinical use was pioneered as digitalis by William Withering, is used as a medication for heart failure. He recognized that it "reduced dropsy", increased urine flow and had a powerful effect on the heart. Unlike the purified pharmacological forms, extracts of this plant didn't frequently cause intoxication because they induced nausea and vomiting within minutes of ingestion, preventing the patient from consuming more.

Foxglove is one of my favorite flowers. I suggest using the French Intensive Method.

In general ants don't hurt plants.

And yes, Foxglove is toxic so be careful with the dog.

I did know that when i bought the plants, But thank you very much for telling me in case i had not known that. And no i am not being sarcastic.

She won't be allowed in the area where the plants are, since the plants are on the side of the garage and the area is not fenced and has direct access to the road. The rest of our yard is fenced.

You are most welcome and thank you for understanding the nature of my intent!

Enjoy the lovely flowers. I adore foxglove but dare not plant it. Queen Sophia seems to be like a baby just learning to crawl and has to put everything in her mouth.

If there was any chance Calley may could get to it, i wouldn't have planted it either. As they are now they're on a 4 foot tall shelf, but i am going to plant them in a planter pot soon , because they do not seem to like their current pot they came home in. I hope they'll like the bigger pot better, and not get so thirsty so fast and maybe feel free to spread out abit.

Your state has a Master Gardener Program (http://camastergardeners.ucdavis.edu/) where you can ask questions of trained vounteers.

Look for the link that says "Ask Us!"

I think Mom has foxgloves. I did at my house. I'm really enjoying spring in Massachusetts - South Florida was over landscaped with annuals.

I just got my kale and parsley into bigger containers. Mom has the big gardens, but she's 45 minutes away. I have herbs and kale here. Fresh picked kale is not tough so can be eaten raw in a salad, and easier to grow than lettuce.

All I can add to this is that I've kept Foxgloves for about 20 years at various homes.

I've always had dogs and I've always had a few ants, they never bothered one another in my gardens.

I love Foxgloves....I can't grow them on my balcony but a friend grows them in his backyard and I go and cut them just about this time of year...attached is a pic of some I cut last year...If anyone knows what the smaller red flower is..please let me know. I know a lot about plants but don't know what that one is and haven't googled it....Thanks! PS..As far as ants go...

I had some ants take up residence in a grapefruit tree I grew from a seed for years but still under a couple feet tall. I poured water over them in the potted plant numerous times and they just wouldn't leave so I threw out the plant...but that is different than what you are dealing with....I am four stories off the ground.

The red flower looks like a hibiscus to me.

I guess it does but the plant was very short and the leaves shown there are part of the plant and totally different from a hibiscus..I think I will crop the photo and Google that flower only and see what it is....It doesn't have the center long stamen that comes out of a hibiscus either...
