Steve Doocy Adds "Unlike Some People" To Obama "Silver Spoon" Quote

They say a lie can get halfway around the world before the truth gets its boots on, but having a top-rated cable news network on its side helps the lie out even more. TPM points out that Fox and Friends host Steve Doocy got creative with a President Obama quote, adding the words “unlike some people” to the President’s “I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth.”

The President’s actual quote drew a tellingly defensive response from Mitt Romney, and while Doocy should have quoted the President accurately, the ensuing outrage isn’t completely out of left field.

Here’s Steve Doocy’s POTUS remix, from Fox and Friends, followed by what the President really said:

Watch video: http://www.mediaite.com/tv/the-dooce-is-loose-with-the-truth-steve-doocy-adds-unlike-some-people-to-obama-silver-spoon-quote/

TPM also noted that Fox News’ propulsion of the Fauxte extended beyond their own viewership:

Regardless, the unspoken words were imputed to Obama in a Washington Post article, a New York Post editorial and conservative blogs after Doocy’s segment.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the remark had nothing to do with Romney. Nor is the phrase new: Obama used the words “silver spoon” in a similar context during a March 2009 speech about the importance of education and opportunity.
Now, as far as the White House denial goes, it had to have at least occurred to someone that the remark might be seen as a shot at Romney, and decided to leave it in. Politically, this is a feature, not a bug, as it puts Romney on the defensive about the low-tax, high-income policies he promotes, which just so happen to benefit him personally. While the President, and the context he surrounded the remark with, may say otherwise, we all know that a Romney-centric interpretation of that remark was not unwelcome.

That’s just how it is, though. Sometimes, these things are hard to pin down, even when they’re obvious. The beauty (or the frustration, depending on your point of view) of the fig leaf , strategically, is that it serves to amplify the attack, even as it obscures it.

Speaking of fig leaves, though, TPM’s headline leaves Doocy some undeserved wiggle room, posing its premise in the form of a question: “Did Fox News Fabricate An Obama Quote?”

There’s no question about it, Doocy tells Romney “Here’s what (the President) said,” and looks down to read the “quote.” It’s quite possible he was foiled by some bad copywriter, but we’ll have to wait and see. Fox didn’t respond to TPM’s request for comment. I expect Doocy will make a quiet correction tomorrow morning, as he has done in the past.

LOL Here is his explanation

..."Last week, President Obama talked about not being born with a silver spoon in his mouth. That was interpreted as a big dig at Mitt Romney. When I was interviewing Governor Romney on this show, I asked him about it. However, I did some paraphrasing that seemed to misquote the president. So to be clear, the President’s exact quote was 'I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth.' And I hope that clears up any confusion."

just out today I believe http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/24/steve-doocy-obama-correction-apology-silver-spoon-fox-news_n_1448653.html
just ran across it

its ok dooce we know you seem to be smart. but the truth is? OTHER

kalikshama -> RE: The Dooce Is Loose With The Truth (4/24/2012 10:19:32 AM)

“Unlike some people,” Doocy had said in his attempt to present the President’s quote to guest Mitt Romney, “I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth.”

“‘Unlike some people,’” Colbert repeated. “Oh gee, who could Obama possibly mean? We all know when you’re talking about someone being born into privilege, it can only mean Mitt Romney. So pretty. And it is bound to backfire on the President because being born rich is Mitt Romney’s greatest accomplishment.”

Of course, President Obama had never said “unlike some people” in his original remark, saying instead that “somebody gave me an education; I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. Michelle wasn’t. But somebody gave us a chance.”

So then Doocy, Colbert explained, had merely been “practicing journalism plus” by embellishing the President’s words. Colbert provided another example: “I don’t give out handjobs at the bus station. …Unlike some people.” Doocy’s journalism plus proved so successful that his “unlike some people” addition was quoted verbatim in both the New York Post and the Washington Post in what Colbert referred to as “picking up a Dooce with your bare hands.”

Colbert continued:

But just because the President’s been saying it since 2009, it doesn’t mean it’s not about Mitt Romney. He’s been running since 2005. In fact, Obama’s been taking potshots at Mitt Romney all the way back to his 2008 campaign with its passive aggressive slogan “Yes we can… Unlike some people.” So. Fact… fact. So excellent reporting, Steve Doocy. And I know good reporting; I am an independent newsman, not some smug, self-satisfied brown-noser toting for the Republican establishment.
Unlike some people.

Yeeeeeouch. Check it out, via Comedy Central:

Obama definetly made the comment He wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth. I would assume he is implying being born to rich parents insulates you from life's problems. Thus not worthy to run for public office. Otherwise, why whould he make that statement in a contest between a rich man and him ?

His tax returns show over 700,000 income. I think a lot would say that is "rich." What does that make HIS OWN children? According to Obama's views, does that mean his own children are not worthy to run for public office when they grow up?

I would assume you haven't a clue what he is implying.

Obama definetly made the comment He wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth. No one said otherwise. Assuming what he meant is pointless ...that isnt in question. However he didnt say What Doocy said he did. You can assume all why he said it all you like. And assuming he meant not worthy of running for office is also baseless, so your second point is moot too.

The point is that Doocy added "unlike some people" which was not part of the Obama quote and this error was picked up by the Washington Post and NY Post.

Obama has been saying stuff like that since 2008...to let people know he knows he understands middle America. He knows what it is to be on food stamps (his mother was food stamps "for a while" when he a kid); he knows what is like to be poor.

But think "rich men" and Obama...the Kennedy family was never poor. Yet the Kennedy family were one of the most effective fighters for the rights of the middle class during the 50s, 60s and 70s. It was why JFK won the presidency and why Jackie was such an icon as First Lady. It is also why Senator Kennedy had such a long career. And why the right despised them so much.

It is also why the Romneys are trying so hard to emulate them.

The thing is, the Kennedy family had class. I see no class with Romney and Mrs. "I'm glad some women don't have a choice".

That is right. Obama was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth. It was a Llasa Apso.

Oh, and the whole truth and lies and around the world thing? I can explain that. You see, truth is beauty. So truth must be a female. Do you know ANY female with only one pair of shoes? No.

This is why rumor gets such an advantage. Depending on what type of truth it is, Truth must pick out some shoes. Comfy slippers for home truths, spikey boots for hard truths. . . you get the idea. And Truth is a goddess. So she has a LOT of shoes to go through.

Being born to rich parents does insulate you in life. Do a little research on the American dream and get back to me on whether you thng it's a huge advantage to be born rich. Oh hell here you go:http://articles.marketwatch.com/2012-01-19/commentary/30787970_1_american-dream-immigration-canada-mobility In America born rich means die rich and born poor means die poor. We need Mit Romney's tricjle down high end tax cuts exactly why? http://www.beyondchron.org/articles/The_Middle_Class_Hasn_t_Disappeared_It_s_Just_Sliding_Toward_the_Bottom_10092.html 2 percent of Americans own 93 percent of the wealth why in the world cut services to the poor to give them a bit more?

Fellow -> RE: The Dooce Is Loose With The Truth (4/27/2012 4:55:40 PM)

The Obama quote was obviously taken out of context.
As the issue itself is concerned, it could be argued, people with poor or otherwise unhealthy backgrounds are not very well suited to govern. Obama past is largely secret (and the reason for secrecy is also top secret). He was certainly not rich. His education funding is suspicious. There are news, at certain point at the university, he was known as a foreign exchange student. I guess it had to do something with funding.
Certain aspects of Obama actions and no-actions could be explained with this. For example, total failure to restrain criminal behavior by oligarchy aristocrats (being intimidated by their position of wealth and privilege?). In the past kings were grown from the cradle to be rulers that increased the probability for success of their kingdoms. Pyramid power structure has been proven to be stable and prosperous.

Are you running for "Most full of shit" on this forum?

Please DEMONSTRATE this 'secrecy'.

I am getting sick of some of the moronic BS that some people put forward here and I am calling your bluff. Let's see you support your claim.

kalikshama -> RE: The Dooce Is Loose With The Truth (4/28/2012 6:51:57 AM)

Given his views on Osama Bin Laden's death, I think your expectations are too high.
