Because at the time they intend to use it. Like all good intentions, that just get forgotten by the wayside lol.

Why stock up on things you rarely use? It's so wasteful. The trash is a good place for that stuff.

Well, a box of Twinkies are good for about 20,000 past the expiration date with no appreciable flavor change.

Cereals, crackers, cakes and other cooked grains other than Twinkies (and Ho Hos') certainly don't last for years past the expiration date.

The military has things like irradiated powdered eggs and milk stored in bunkers that will last for . . . well, almost as long as Twinkies.

Were your boxed goods anywhere near Three Mile Island on March 28, 1979, if so they are probably right as rain. Otherwise not.

Also, as an FYI.........the structural integrity of denim also has an expiration date.

Lately I've been losing more weight and inches. Enough so that I've shrunk out of the sizes I've been in and out of for the last 10ish years. I had a stash that were like brand new, that I had bought during the early expansion process, that ended up never fitting and because I hate returning stuff, ended up tossed in the back of the closet.

I've been in the process of getting rid of clothes that don't fit, out of style, I will never in a million years wear. I've been pulling out these old, but I THOUGHT like new, jeans and discovering that some of them fit perfectly. What I was unaware of, is that even though they were never really worn, the fibres apparently have broke down a bit. Of course they don't tell you this right away, but they do let you know. At the most inopportune times.

Not that I would dream of contradicting you.... but consider this more of an alternate universe theory. In that universe, denim exposed to even wear, perhaps from something like a flat ass, would last longer than the ass in a pair of jeans that were strapped on over a nice round curvacious butt. Being the the arch of the curve experiences the most stress, wear, tear and friction. Um... after perving your profile pics, if you were in an other universe, it may just be your fine feminine assets causing the wear & tear on the arse of your jeans.

I have to admit that although I think I've gone through the pantry thoroughly, every so often we find stuff at the far back that must be ten years old. Ten years ago, my kids thought jello chocolate pudding was 5 star eating. Today, not so much. The problem here is that the pantry has seriously deep shelves. Like over two feet deep and the hall light does nothing to help me see in there. I was looking for a bottle of club soda yesterday and found a bottle of prune juice.

I think it must be almost 20 years old. I'm scared to open it and dump the contents so I can wash and recycle the bottle/

A couple of months living the LA life-style and inline skating seriously long distances and swimming every day also resulted in some serious toning up. Now having lived in raggedy old shorts and t-shirts for most of the time, I didn't really notice until the weather started to be rainy for a few days and I got fed up with wearing leggings and grabbed my old jeans, took me a while to figure out why they looked all baggy, then rushed to the shop to buy new ones (for a change not the Salvation Army store), now since I splurged for new jeans and a bikini, I'm kinda terrified of gaining an ounce. I'm kinda debating if it's worth getting a new wardrobe... Now if I could only get my boobs to shrink, that would be heaven!

most boxed stuff I only keep a max of 3 months past expiration. The texture and flavor can change after that. Spices I throw out after a year past expiration because they become stale and flat and can also turn rancid.

Master had some coffee at his house that had an expiration date from at least 4 years ago. He kinda looked at me weird when I threw it away. He didn't know that coffee grounds can go rancid and acidic.

Coffee is one thing that is guaranteed to never be stale in this house!

There are guidelines online that will tell you about safety and expiration dates in general if you look it up in a search engine. I'd say medication a few months out of date is ok but after that definitely throw it out. Medication can become ineffective when it's old or it can actually change in composition.

Food items are probably ok to use when somewhat outdated but if it tastes stale or icky who is going to want to eat it? If you spend the time making the outdated cakes, puddings, etc, and use ingredients that you have purchased and use energy to bake it and also use your time....is the result going in the trash and therefore will be a complete waste of the supplies, heat, and your time? For myself if it's within half a year I"d probably be ok with it, if more I'd probably toss it because at that point I'm not wasting the effort to make something that's iffy as to what the result will be.

My parents have a lot of puddings and boxed sweet mixes like cake mixes and stuff that expired in 2009, 2008, and i want to throw them away, but i hesitate to, because i feel it's rude, they bought it, and it was their money and if they wanna eat it as long as they're not trying to feed it to J and I , more power to them, as long as it's not going to make them sick. The salad dressings and stuff i will throw away, because that shit is clearly rancid, you can tell by looking at it.

"How long past expiration date can boxed goods be tasty?"

My Mom's chest freezer died last fall and she ended up composting stuff from the natural food coop that she belonged to before she moved in 1994

Buying in bulk does not save money when one does not use the food.

After the 2005 hurricane season, I created a hurricane stash and ended up donating a lot of the canned goods as I wasn't vigilant about expiration dates. I will go a few months over but not more than 6.

I know itsgross, but they had dome cans so old at one point they started leaking thick black crape. Reminded brown molasses. Quite the nasty mess.
