I don't see any downside. You?

mnottertail -> RE: Minimum Wage FOR LEGISLATORS! The time has come! (4/28/2012 6:31:50 AM)

Other than they would be overpayed at that?

jlf1961 -> RE: Minimum Wage FOR LEGISLATORS! The time has come! (4/28/2012 6:31:54 AM)

I have been saying that congressmen and women should be paid no more than 50k a year for ages.

farglebargle -> RE: Minimum Wage FOR LEGISLATORS! The time has come! (4/28/2012 6:35:31 AM)

50k? Way too generous!

TOTALLY AGREE ... The Banksters are the ones paying the actual amounts that get their attention. I think frankly that since we can't get even vague representation as constituents, why should we have to pay them anything?
We should probably get a ROYALTY from them for using OUR PUBLIC OFFICES as tool for wealth building.

DarkSteven -> RE: Minimum Wage FOR LEGISLATORS! The time has come! (4/28/2012 8:52:25 AM)

They'd still be getting paid more than some of their pages. There's an exemption in minimum wage for Congressional help.

xXLithiumXx -> RE: Minimum Wage FOR LEGISLATORS! The time has come! (4/28/2012 8:56:47 AM)

This country needs a revolution. And not some pansy ass sit in, or occupation of some place that is just a filtration system for laundering money...I mean a dyed in the wool, blow shit up, take back what was given to us, stop playing around...revolution.

Cos all this sitting around bitching isn't making anything happen.

Yes. Irrelevance.

You could cut their pay entirely, and it would change nothing. The power and influence is worth far more than the frankly not very much we pay them now.

Paying them also allows us to continue the illusion that an ordinary common person could be elected and pursue a career as a legislator.

Think of it as Congress' tribute to serfdom.

REALLY? You still harbor that fantasy. I can tell you from right insider the data center of a US Senate campaign THAT'S BULLSHIT.

Why are you telling me it's a bullshit fantasy when I've already said it's an illusion?

Nobody fucking reads here--they just react to the voices in their heads. That's why these boards suck.

SoftBonds -> RE: Minimum Wage FOR LEGISLATORS! The time has come! (4/28/2012 10:09:46 AM)

I'd oppose the minimum wage idea, but I'd like to propose a different idea. Pay for work.
AKA, instead of a salary, pay legislatures for each hour they are in session, not for "fact finding trips," not for campaigning, only pay for the time they are in session, and dock their wages for times they skip out.
I also think we should have a very nice retirement package for anyone who has served the nation in congress or the executive branch for at least 20 years (Well, what we already have). The difference I'd like to see is making it mandatory. If you have been a federal elected official for 20 years, you can't run for office again. Now a Senator could get 24 years, that is fine, but after their 4th term they would be done.
Gets rid of some of the seniority BS too.
Oh, actually, how about replace seniority by "mandate," the higher the percentage vote you get to be elected, the higher your mandate, and thus your right to speak, chair committees, etc?

I probably should have re-read how I addressed it. What I intended to express was surprise anybody still harbored such beliefs.
Will you ever forgive me and the rest of the great unwashed, oh great one?[:D]

Cut out lobbying.

End the PACs.

Make them account for every dime going in and coming out.

Make it a felony to lie on financial disclosure forms... a misdemeanor for unintended errors.. no exceptions.

Pay them a decent salary.

Love how people call for a revolution, but expect somebody else to start it.

erieangel -> RE: Minimum Wage FOR LEGISLATORS! The time has come! (4/28/2012 4:50:06 PM)

I have the solution:

Minimum wage for the time congress is in session.

A housing allowance (like married military get and congress-critters already receive anyway) but much smaller than the one they get now.

X-number of economy-class taxpayer-paid flights to work at home district assume 36-40 hrs. per week of work at home district offices during those times--minimum wage.

Outlaw super Pacs.

Outlaw lobbying dollars going to congress-persons.

Term limits.

Make it illegal for lobbyist to work in government and for government officials (even aids) to work as lobbyists for at least 10 years (I'd like to see a life time prohibition permanently closing this revolving door).

Now what are the chances of congress actually voting for such deep cuts to their own livelihoods?? For any one of these ideas for that matter? Can you imagine Issa, the richest man in Congress, taking a flight economy? He would be disgraced at the notion.

Our representatives have maligned public workers a great deal in the past couple of years, obviously forgetting that they are the highest paid, with the best benefits packages, of all public workers. Yet they do nothing to curb their own excesses. And they hold the ability to vote themselves raises whenever they wish. How is this democracy??

MasterRumpwrecke -> RE: Minimum Wage FOR LEGISLATORS! The time has come! (4/28/2012 4:53:21 PM)

I think they should have to make due with the same pay and benefits as an E-1 in the military and they should have to pay rent on their offices.

Even a married E-1 gets a housing allowance.
