Some of the images in this video may be disturbing. They sure the hell disturbed me, as I was watching the news over my caffeine, and getting ready to go work my night shift.

Thoughts? Memories? Could it happen again?

"Could it happen again?"

Are your police still gang beating unarmed men(or woman)?

"My police?" I don't live in the LAPD's jurisdiction, never have, and will be completely ok with it if I never do. I had an asshole uncle who retired from the department, but we never liked each other, and I was the designated driver when his stepson went to piss on the grave.

Or are you just trying to make sure the topic gets broken along the only lines you are capable of seeing the world through?

What is the difference between these cases, Rich? I am in agreement this time was extremely disturbing. Reginald Denny went through hell, and he was but one victim.

How many times are we going to hear about this in relation to anything race related in California?

Huge difference between whats going on now in Florida and what happened in LA.

"Could it happen again," isn't restricted to the outrage du jour in Florida, Tazzy. It could have been the Oakland cop who shot a man on a subway platform. Or it could be the next one, because there will always be a next one.

I *think* that African-Americans are being treated better in this nation than they were in the past. I *think* that a lot of the folks who remember the really crappy treatment are pretty old right now (the 60's, when a lot of race riots happened, are 50 years ago now). So I *think* that a race riot is unlikely-at least, one by African-Americans.
Now a riot by Hispanics given the way they are being treated in some areas? Certainly possible.
A riot by poor, jobless people who are fed up with promises instead of food? Very possible.
If the latter happens, I really hope they actually get smart and go to the high class neighborhoods to riot, instead of just doing it in their own area. Given all the statistics about the rich donating less to charity than the middle class, and the way the rich are gutting jobs and wages, the only way those folks will see the need for bigger government (both to provide security and to make sure people have opportunities so they don't need to riot), will be to have this shit on their doorstep...

So, something along these lines then?

How is that different than the Boston Tea Party?

Yes, I am aware of the incident... since I am the one who brings it up on the other thread.

As his rig crossed Florence, a group of rioters enraged over the Rodney King verdict rushed toward him, pulled him out of the cab and beat him to within an inch of his life. The attack ended when Damian Monroe Williams took a cinderblock and bashed Denny's skull, fracturing it in 91 places and causing severe brain damage.

The only reason he probably did not die that day was because four South Central residents, Bobby Green, Lei Yuille, Titus Murphy and Terri Barnett, who saw the entire incident on television, raced to the scene. Despite the risk to their own lives, they grabbed Denny, put him back into his cab and drove him to a nearby hospital where doctors were able to save his life.

Green, then a 29-year-old part-time trucker, watched the events slowly unfold on his living room television set in South Central L.A. About a half mile from his home, trucker Reginald Denny was set upon by an enraged mob, dragged out of his truck, beaten, kicked and finally bashed in the head with a cinderblock.

Green had seen enough. He raced down to the scene and when he got there, he met up with three other good samaritans, Lei Yuille, Titus Murphy, and Terri Barnett. None of the four had any connection to Denny or to those assaulting him. They just knew he needed help.

Your point?

And thank God for those courageous people who managed to get him to a hospital after he was dragged from the truck and beaten nearly to death, Tazzy, but I'm still confuzzled as all hell to where you get the Boston tea-party from the random violence of 20 years ago.

Yes.

There were riots in England just a few months ago.

Mob violence is an interesting phenomenon. It is easy to whip a group up into a frenzy. It is much more difficult to get them to stop.

The only thing I can think of to contribute to this thread is a favorite piece from the Book of Common Prayer. If religious language isn't one's thing, you might still connect with the hope it expresses.

O God, who created all peoples in your image, we thank you
for the wonderful diversity of races and cultures in this world.
Enrich our lives by ever-widening circles of fellowship, and
show us your presence in those who differ most from us, until
our knowledge of your love is made perfect in our love for all
your children; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Because its all about what they people perceive as fairness by government. The Tea Party was against the unfairness of taxes. The Watts riots.. again... perceived unfairness. The LA riots.. again... perceived unfairness. To be honest, I am surprised we did not have one in Pittsburgh over the case here. But I believe the FBI did a good job in their investigation and so did the people here.

The Watts riot had 34 deaths... the LA riots had 54 deaths. Definitely nothing to be taken lightly under any circumstances. I watched the Denny scene.. and felt so helpless that I cried. But what happens is that people do forget... they forget what isnt kept in the forefront. Many do not know, or remember, who helped Denny out that day. Many do not know that right down the street, after Denny was removed from the scene, that a hispanic male was almost killed as well. And that had it not been for a black preacher placing himself between the man and his attackers, he would have died as well.

Its a damn shame that these events had to happen before our government finally woke the hell up to make changes. What these events have in common is the unfair treatment of people by the government, for whatever reason. What makes the LA Riots different is that it was there... in black and white... on TV... no doubt as to what happened.. and the white cops (and one hispanic) were still found innocent.

We can expect people to take only so much. People dont forget... sadly, our government does it far too often. While I would prefer it never happen again.. the riots... in this political era, I dont hold out much hope.

Seriously... more and more people are calling for violence... and it seems the only thing the government truly listens too is violence.

Seriously I'm not calling for anything. I'm just suggesting be prepared.

The only thing rioters truly listen to is the sound of gunfire overhead.

Didnt mean you specifically.... nor anyone on these boards specifically... but the rumbles are there, on various sites on line, and in the streets.
