Should arrest have an age limit?

Arrest is ridiculous.

The kid had already kicked and bitten the principal. So he did it again. Were I the principal, I would have expelled him, and called his parents to get the brat.

If a 6 year old bites and scratches an adult, it's because one he/she has seen lots of violence, and learned it's how you cope with the world, and two, they have been successful with this strategy before.

They should have arrested the parents for not bothering to teach their child proper behavior. And the 4 year old at the airport? Who are these people kidding?

We are becoming a police state, and this is largely due to people's inability to be able to police themselves, or their children, obviously.

that was my thought also. Maybe if it becomes enough of an inconvenience to the parents they will try harder to teach the kid not to go around kicking people.

Perhaps, as absurd as it sounds, what the kid really needs is a Guardian Ad Litum: a court appointed advocate and then the kid will get the help he really needs.

I cant say.. I know a pretty hard nosed teacher in SoCal that teaches middle school. One day he told me he called the cops on a girl that offered him sex to get a better grade and she also touched him inappropriately (he didnt elaborate on what kind of touching).. I am not sure what the charges were, perhaps sexual assault?.. Her parents denied that she would have ever done that, of course..

But i would hate to be in his shoes, call the police immediately and you will be believed by the school that she offered sex to you. If you dont want to get the girl in trouble & let it slide, she could easily turn the tables & tell her parents the teacher threatened bad grades if she refused his advances.. and then its the teacher trying to stay out of jail and fight to keep his job.. It made me wonder if she had offered other teachers sex for grades before..

That teacher earns about 80k/yr and will get a gold plated pension when he retires in a few years, so he is on easy street, he would never risk that for sex with one of his students..

yes and no, it depends. if a 6 year old understand the crime and can form intent, then technically, yes, they should be charged. but i think this is kind of absurd to charge him anyway; not the best way to handle it.

no, this doesn't sound absurd, sounds like it's what the kid needs, since his parents can't seem to control him.

i hope you're only half serious about this. shouldn't arrest parents unless there's abuse/negligence - rule of law argument here - you're kind of advocating fascism.

true, but disagree on the cause. people have never been able to police themselves, and each successive generation longs for when things were better (and people policed themselves). we're becoming more and more a fascist police state because things tend to go in cycles. We're on the rising curve of more intervention and control with new tools that make it easier to control populations.

a 6 year old has barely entered the cognitive stage... that era when they begin to learn concrete thinking.

More than likely the child has had no discipline. Something that teaches a child some level of self control. I would have thought the parents, with the school insisting, would have gotten the child evaluated after the suspension... yet the story doesnt say. If not, that should have been done.

Having said that.... spare the rod, spoil the child.. and I dont mean beating.

That's a possibility but certainly not the only possibility.

These kids need serious help. Far too many kids show severe signs of emotional problems which they exhibit through anger and violence. Parents do not spend enough time with their children, but rather expect them to be miniature adults. At the same time, we feed them garbage, even when we tell ourselves we are feeding them wholesome foods through all the additives, steroids, antibiotics, and genetic modifications our food sources go through before reaching the grocery store shelves.

Arrest is not answer in dealing with kids. Counseling and perhaps even mild medication therapy is needed as well and parenting classes, family therapy and some type in-school support system, to help these students remain calm and learn coping skills when things start spinning out of control in the moment.

Well when I was a kid bullying was rampant. Recess was like a viking skirmish, all fun and games until a whole bunch of kids got shot. That's why this is happening, plan A for maintaining order: corporal punishment became socially unacceptable. Plan B look the other way resulted in killing sprees by victims who just couldn't take it anymore. Now we're on plan C sending kids to juvie.

My direct answer would be no.  Not if the idea of "too young" is being based on this particular six year old.  In fact, it might have been the most effective thing that the principle could do.

Keep some things in mind.  This principle has to abide by the code of student behavior.  Their school may or may not allow up to expulsion for the kid's actions.  Meaning, anything less does not protect the others who come in contact with the child.

It's not the first incident.  That means that whatever, if any, actions taken by the parents weren't effective the last time around.  This could be anything from ineffective discipline at home or not seeking out the help that the kid might need.  A court appearance and/or guilty verdict that includes therapy is something that the parents can't ignore.

Last but not least, the paper trail.  School officials no longer have the luxury of not documenting these kinds of issues.  Ten years from now, if that particular kid is the one who does shoot up a school, there would be tons of public outcry of 'why didn't anybody take action before'.  This principal is making sure those types of questions will not be directed his way.

I'm a fan of genetic modification personally that said, not really relevant to the topic.

I also don't want to just jump on the parental neglect band wagon there are other possible causes, mental illness for instance.
