tweakabelle -> Rupert Murdoch 'not fit' to lead major company, UK MPs say (5/1/2012 6:36:33 AM)

Fox-TV owner Rupert Murdoch "is "not a fit person" to exercise stewardship of a major international company, a committee of MPs has concluded, in a report highly critical of the mogul and his son James's role in the News of the World phone-hacking affair.

The Commons culture, media and sport select committee also concluded that James Murdoch showed "wilful ignorance" of the extent of phone hacking during 2009 and 2010"

In further damning findings on other senior News Corp executives, the Guardian reported:
"The culture select committee charged [ex-News executive] Hinton with being "complicit" in a cover-up of wrongdoing at Rupert Murdoch's media empire. MPs said that [ex-News executive] Myler and [ex-News legal counsel] Crone deliberately withheld crucial information and answered falsely questions put by the committee.

The executives demonstrated contempt for parliament "in the most blatant fashion", the MPs said, in what they described as a corporate attempt to mislead the committee about the true extent of phone hacking at the News of the World.

The report is likely to have a major effect on the Murdochs' and News Corp's future on both sides of the pond.

Pity they didn't notice this twenty years ago, really.
Spineless, gutless shower of fawning little wankers...

My understanding is that this is just the set-up for the NEXT part, which is finding that Murdoch isn't fit to hold a broadcast license.

I'd be delighted to see it pan out that way, as Murdoch pere was sacrificing the print media to let his heir consolidate the broadcast media holdings, but don't hold your breath waiting for that one, eh?

Can somebody finally bring his ass up on treason charges for all the lies and intentional terrorist manipulation spreading fear and misinformation?

Not in Great Britain, sad to say, since he isn't a UK citizen. However that can be argued here.

Im not sure the "not a fit person" comment was actually useful. It caused a split along party lines and was something Tom Watson MP wanted put in the report. The rest of the report was damning enough and had the backing of the whole committee. Either way Murdochs tenure at BSKYB may well be decided in the States, if shareholders withdraw backing. The split is a distraction thats been seized upon by Murdoch already. Either way, I think his days in the UK are finished.

One major lesson all countries could learn from this is as follows, dont let any company have a virtual monopoly of local media.

My thoughts exactly. Murdoch is a world-class arse, but the timid, snivelling politicians who bum-licked him for so many years are worse. I honestly think the entire shape of the UK's political culture would be vastly different were it not for them kowtowing to him and his henchmen.

I can't wait for the Americans really to sink their teeth into him. That should be even more fun to watch.

My understanding is that the phrase "fit person" is the test used by Ofcom to determine suitability to hold broadcasting licenses. So it is very relevant to Murdoch's ongoing interest in pay TV through Sky TV.

As it would appear difficult for a bureaucratic entity such as Ofcom (the UK broadcasting regulator) to go against a finding by a Parliamentary Select Committee, Ofcom may feel obliged to make an adverse finding in relation to Murdoch's Pay TV interests.

I certainly hope so - if the UK moves against Murdoch, that might generate enough momentum for similar moves in the US and here in Oz, where our politicians are even more supine and spineless than yours appear to be.

Of course, everyone here does realise that Murdoch was in the pay of the Australian Government, don't they? A very clever and intricate plot by those fiendish, inscrutable Aussies, to take over the world?

Ooooonly joking, Tweaks. ;-).

I hope he tops himself, then gets reincarnated as a walrus's scrotum (again).

Peon, are you sure you aren't confusing Murdoch with the equally odious Mel Gibson? They are two of our uglier exports - even our iron ore is prettier!

I am disgusted by the political split, with labour going one way and conservative going the other. This should not be a political decision, it is about legal rights and wrongs. If now isn't the time for the government in power to try and extricate itself from Murdochs evil empire when is? I can't help thinking that the conservatives on the commitee have been ordered to back Murdoch....as stated previously Spineless, gutless shower of fawning little wankers...

Murdoch's papers have generally looked after right wing interests. Without the steady stream of propaganda pumped by The Sun, in particular, for so many years, we may not have had a Tory government since Thatcher's day. Nor would we have had a Labour government that shifted so far to the right in order to keep Murdoch, in the main amongst media moguls, happy.

The Tories just know which side their bread's buttered, that's all.

as do all parties, but surely this was a chance to get some distance, maybe get some seperation between party politics and the media, but the cons have put it smack bang in the middle again which prolongs and enhances the power of the media.
I want to hear the unbiased truth when I read a paper, not just what polititions and media types have cooked up over expensive dinners for their own benefit, the Leverson enquiry could have made a difference, now it won't and we are back to square one.

So what?

Do you read his papers?

I don't.

And even if I did....what the fuck do I care?

I actually read (other....lots of) news....so his don't/doesn't objectify me...nor do they (or any other news source) turn my head.

Why do you give a shit?

Why don't you read enough to discern?

(The facts).
