quote:

The developments this week raise questions about whether the Log Cabin Republicans will endorse Romney for president, despite his promise to pursue a federal amendment banning same-sex marriage, among other anti-gay positions he’s articulated during the primary season.

The debate over whether to endorse Romney could prove thorny for Log Cabin. On one hand, the organization is likely to feel pressure from its Republican base to throw its support behind the party’s standard-bearer in the general election. On the other, Romney has backed anti-gay positions during the primary season, including support for a U.S. constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage throughout the country and a pledge to defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court.

I think his failure to defend his advisor against the anti gay element of the GOP should make it clear he has no regard for homsexuals.

He see's the world through a looking glass that is decidedly different from yours.

Choose.

(Ya get 2 choices....pick one).

I would guess that being a gay Republican is something like being a pro-choice Republican, or even an angry, homophobic, Democrat for that matter. You take a leap of faith that it ain't going to happen, and stick with the side you believe in more, on the rest.

1. What's the impact of the LCR endorsement? In other words, how valuable will it be to Romney to get it? And will it create issues with the conservative right if he gets it?

2. Exactly how pro-gay will Romney have to be to garner an endorsement?

3. What happens if they give one? Will their rank and file view that as a sellout?

I think it will be more telling if they DON'T endorse him.

With all the rhetoric we have all been hearing from the Right and the GOP on matters of sexual freedom recently, why hasn't it been agreed that the term 'gay Republican' is an oxymoron?

The GOP appears to have been taken over effectively by the Religious Right, people who are not terribly kindly disposed towards issues of sexual freedom for any one - straight gay bi or whatever. I have no idea why any one who prioritises sexual freedom would even consider having any association with the GOP.

As things stand, you can have sexual freedom, or you can have the GOP, but you can't have both.

For me, it's because there are a lot of issues out there that are more important to me. If the only thing I cared about was sexual issues, that would be different, but it isn't.
You have to look at the whole picture.

There is some kind of weird control dynamic with them. Think about it. They first announced their presence during Anita Bryant's wave of terror.
When you think about some of the pricks they HAVE supported, I gotta believe they've lost much of their free will. I think last time they didn't just throw their support in w/o a peep was Bush Sr. That was the last time they really displayed any strength.
Of course it's arguable this sudden wave of gay marriage the republicans tried to ride as a publicity stunt was at least influenced by some soft sell from LCR.
Whatever, I highly doubt they have the brass to oppose Romney. And even if they do, their real presence in the party is pretty small. So unless they move that huge population of closeted republicans, it hardly matters what they do.

Our local Masonic Temple discouraged a self-proclaimed "log cabin" right out of the masons a few years back. And THAT is a huge republican stronghold here in town.

Romney the liberal once said, "I will be your voice" to the gay community. I hope they haven't forgotten!!

Hillwilliam -> RE: Will Log Cabin Endorse Romney? (5/4/2012 5:17:18 AM)

Log Cabin Republicans are in a quandary. It's kind of like Ducks Unlimited or the Rocky Mountain Elk foundation.
The latter 2 groups hope that one party will help protect their Second amendment rights while not paving or mining every last piece of wilderness in the country. Then the hope the other party will protect the lands they hunt on without taking away the tools of the trade as it were.

Log Cabin Republicans hope that Mr Romney will lead the country to a more prosperous future without disenfranchising them.

Did they force him out because he was gay or a republican?

I think though, that the unfortunately, they really have no 'gay vote' to deliver so what's left? Certainly not much money in comparison to the 100s of millions the straight and demonstrably PREJUDICED republican mainstream in a rather significant portion of the country's electoral districts will be doling out. It;s bot like there's some closeted queer super-fund hidden away that the massively wealthy but closeted gay exists...Right?
At least the ducks unlimited and elks guys are dealing with localized issues and usually have quite a lot of cash back0up BRA, gun companies, etc? Who's offering up the corporate sponsorship for the Log Cabin Republicans?.... OKAY THAT'S AS FAR AS I'M STICKIN MY NECK OUT TO ILLUSTRATE A POINT[:D]

It the temple was, as SS described it, "a huge republican stronghold," why would they force him out for being Republican?
