Reikm -> Transgender vs Transsexual vs Transvestite (5/3/2012 8:35:29 AM)

Alright.

I have noticed there is a lot of confusion on this site about the above terms, and honeslty I blame Collar Me for lumping TV with TG and TS.

Transgender: A person born feeling they are of the wrong gender.
Transsexual: A transgender who decides to start transition.
Pre OP Transsexual: A transsexual who has yet to do sexual reassignment surgery.
Post OP Transsexual: A transsexual who has had sexual reassignment surgery.
Non OP Transsexual: A transsexual who feels they are of the opposite sex, but has no interest in sexual reassignment surgery.
MTF (Male to Female) Transsexual: A Male who feels they are actually a female and is in transition.
FTM (Female to Male) Transsexual: A Female who feels they are actually a male and is in transition.
Transition: The name for the process in which a Transsexual changes from one gender to the other. Involves dressing full time as the gender, Hormone Replacement Therapy, and for some Sexual Reassignment Surgery.
HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy): A process of blocking the bodys natural hormones and supplementing them with the other genders hormones.
SRS (Sexual Reassignment Surgery): The final stage of transition except for Non OPs. Involves turning the current genitals into the other genders genitals.
Gender Identity: The gender the person most identify with.

Transvestite: A man or woman who still feels they are a man or woman but likes to cross dress in the other genders clothing and gender bend.

Important to note that MTFs can be lesbians, and FTMs can be gay, gender identity and sexual preference are not linked.

Is this news to anyone? We all know this.

Except for a couple of cave dwellers filled with bigotry of course. But nobody pays attention to them.

I just had like 10 people on chat get these terms mixed up... I wanted an easy peasy quick link to give them

I have huge collection of born (shemale on girl).. which they call it on the web..
that lead to my question.. what is a "Shemale" or "Tranny"..?

Reikm -> RE: Transgender vs Transsexual vs Transvestite (5/3/2012 11:37:44 AM)

Shemale and tranny are derogatory terms for transsexuals and transvestites respectively.

They are terms normally only used in the porn industry, though there are some in either group who dont mind being called it.

Just don't call me late for dinner. [;)]

<Winks at otter>

For the OP: Thank you for these succinct definitions. Although I know the terms, it *is* a nice handy reference. Perhaps you could include it in your journal?

I wish you the wisdom to find the best path on your journey.

Best, CP

Karmastic -> RE: Transgender vs Transsexual vs Transvestite (5/3/2012 2:01:14 PM)

ditto to purple lady, and thanks OP

Alecta -> RE: Transgender vs Transsexual vs Transvestite (5/3/2012 2:26:01 PM)

What about those who fall in-between and have/get parts of both genders? For example a man who desires to have breasts as well as keep his genitals? And terms like "Tgurl", "gurl", "boi" and "Tboi"?

And how do you dispute a transsexuals' terms and definitions for themselves? OO

OttersSwim -> RE: Transgender vs Transsexual vs Transvestite (5/3/2012 2:32:50 PM)

I have always believed it is best not too.

Nobody here is doing that. You're free to call yourself a rhododendron if you like, no one is stopping you.

TNDommeK -> RE: Transgender vs Transsexual vs Transvestite (5/3/2012 3:13:06 PM)

Thanks for the heads up! I knew those terms already but CP is right, that might help someone who doesn't know or isn't sure. :)

Here's another vote for also adding it to your journal.

Reikm -> RE: Transgender vs Transsexual vs Transvestite (5/3/2012 3:45:55 PM)

Thankyou for the idea, I most certainly will.

I'm just curious as to the etiquette.

Rephrase attempt:
What is the correct term for someone who chooses to be in-between genders, and identify simultaneously as both male and female?
I've met people who identify themselves as Tgurls, gurls, bois and Tbois and this seems to be considered unique classifications on their own as opposed to slang. What are the definitions?
And what should one do in a situation where the Transsexual identifies themselves as one term believing it means something different from the common definition of the term and you inevitably trod on their toes by using, to their minds, the wrong term?

Apologies in advance if this offends as I’m keenly aware that many people with gender issues can experience a great deal of hostility but I get a wee bit confuzzled at terms like "non-OP transsexual" etc. Of course people should be entitled to not only explain how they feel but use labels to describe those states if they wish. However, at the same time language is a broad tool we all use primarily to understand our environment so maybe labelling people solely according to what they feel or experience themselves subjectively (e.g. applying the word "woman" regardless of any biology) can be a tad problematic.
