"A PROMINENT Russian gay rights activist has been convicted of spreading ''gay propaganda'' among minors in the first such ruling in Russia's modern history"

Scary stuff.

Given the penchant the GOP has for policing and/or punishing the sexual behaviour of groups not in the GOP's good books*, I wonder how long before some looney Right demagogue introduces a law similar to this obnoxious Russian law in the USA, at Federal or State level.

It's not that far fetched. "Mad Maggie" Thatcher's UK Govt passed the notorious 'Section 28' law in 1988. 'Section 28' remained UK law for 15 years until its repeal in 2003.

According to wiki: "The [Section 28] amendment stated that a local authority "shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" or "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship"" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_28

Any guesses people?

The St Petersburg Law looks pretty feeble and was rightly challenged by Alexeyev. Reminds me of the Scopes Monkey Trial in Tennesee circa 1925 where Scopes deliberately challenged the law against teaching Evolution in the public schools.

A similar anti-gay law in the States would unlikely pass the "Speech" test of our Constitution, I think.

I think you are right on that. But the article was a good chance to take a shot at 1/2 of the US and sometimes that is all that matters.

I understand what you are saying but I take the OP as expressing a deeply and honestly felt concern. I don't perceive any hidden agenda. Depends on where we stand, I guess.

If she had focused on the story which was about a lack of freedom in Russia and not dragged the GOP into it, I might agree.

DarkSteven -> RE: Gay "Propaganda" is now a crime (5/6/2012 6:41:04 AM)

No way. If someone tried to introduce a bill like that, all that would be necessary would be to show that it's modeled on a bill from Russia.

When I read the headline I assumed this was more legislation from Tennessee.

Watch the video in the second image: http://www.towleroad.com/2012/03/takeitn.html

1."Don't Say Gay" bill. Stacey Campfield
2. Protecting bullies (Rep. John Ragan and his bill that protects bullies of LGBT kids behind a veil of religious freedom.)
3. Criminalizes use of bathroom of the gender on one's birth certificate (sponsored by Rep. Richard Floyd, who threatened to "stomp a mud hole" through any transgender person coming near his family.)

More on Stacey Campfield:

"Most people realize that AIDS came from the homosexual community -- it was one guy screwing a monkey, if I recall correctly, and then having sex with men. It was an airline pilot, if I recall," he said in the interview. "My understanding is that it is virtually -- not completely, but virtually -- impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex...very rarely [transmitted]."

Anti-gay bias and violence seems to know few, if any, national boundries. Don't you agree?

Do you find error with her comments about "looney Right demogogue?"

Lucylastic -> RE: Gay "Propaganda" is now a crime (5/6/2012 9:10:14 AM)

The "loony right" doesnt fit half of the half of the half of the half of the Right, so once again, its just about flinging back poo at a post by a lib.

fucktoyprincess -> RE: Gay "Propaganda" is now a crime (5/6/2012 10:46:27 AM)

When I saw the words "gay propaganda towards minors" the one thought I had is that the arena where this has played out in the U.S. has been in sex education mandates for schools (a matter of state law). I know most of the liberal states mandate sex education on homosexuality (including portraying homosexuality in a positive way), but I don't know of hand if all states are that open-minded. It is not clear to me that all sex education programs in the schools in all states contain positive information or portrayals of homosexuality.

And I do know that in some states there are parent groups who are either fighting the laws that mandate teaching about homosexuality or simply pulling their kids out of school.

Some states have sex education rules that allow parents to pull their children out of those classes for personal reasons.

I'm not convinced we are as forward thinking on gay education to minors as we might want to think...

You really expect a country that caved and created hate crime laws to do this? I don't.

You wouldn't think a country where they have all this equality would have right wing fucks trying to pass laws requiring women to have shit stuck in their vaginas in order to receive healthcare. But it's a matter of record, now, isn't it?

Go figure

Your post seems to have a pretty firm grasp of cold war propaganda. You would not happen to have any first hand knowledge about conditions in russia would you?
If not what sort of validation do you have for your insipid post?
