Not so simple. The money was not STATED TO BE campaign contributions. Edwards' claim is that the money was used to hide the affair from his wife. The prosecution's claim is that it was used to hide the affair from the public and thus to keep his candidacy viable. If the jury finds the money to have been used for the campaign or not, is the issue.
