I disagree. I think English is not her first language. As such, she wouldn't have the word "oriental" in her vocabulary unless she was at a fairly high level. Also, the cultural understanding (that she clearly does not have0 would be required to know the difference between Oriental and Asian. Heck, most native speakers don't know the difference.


Oh hell, I just checked her profile. She's in China. Please. No way she knows the difference.

By the way, why are you saying "she would of" when "she would've" is the correct usage? I'm making a point about the lack of knowledge of the English language even amongst natives. It's a mistake that non-natives don't typically make in their writing. They know that the perfect tense uses some variant of "have" - they learn from reading / grammar / writing. Native speakers learn from sound.

race, ethnicity, culture and nationality are not interchangeable ideas.

the concept that there are distinct human races has long been debunked.
as Pyramus correctly stated, it has been proved that "the differences between individual humans is greater than that of so-called 'races'."

eugenics and social Darwinism used to be popular concepts. thankfully, technological advances have given us a greater insight on human genetic variations.

agree. i believe there are genetic markers and tendency for certain physiological traits, but race and ethnicity are sociological concepts that have no basis in biology.

did "SOCIAL darwinism" have no differences between the types of monkeys?
I mean they all monkeys...? right? so there would be no differences what so ever between Chimpanzee & Gibbon

dont get all fuzzy about why i did pick monkeys.. after that I would go with Ants and cockroaches .... To Tigers

In the U.S., the common convention is to use "Asian" to refer to people of Far East Asian descent, "Indian," or specified "Southeast Asian," to refer to those of Indian descent, and Middle Eastern, to refer to those descendant from those Asian countries. But in the U.K., Asian most often means Indian. I've noticed that many people of Middle Eastern descent prefer Persian or Asian.

I tend to think that the OP's intended meaning was Far East Asian, when referring to Asians, and given its conventional use by at least many English speakers, she would not be incorrect.

The way I heard it, 'race' referred to superficial differences only. This wouldn't be like distinguishing between horses and donkeys, it'd be like distinguishing between white horses and brown horses.

More so in the USA than on this side of the pond, I think. I hadn't actually heard that 'oriental' was considered inappropriate till I read it here on these forums some months ago.
