"Schwarzenegger asks, What would Ronald Reagan have done?"

Posted by
CNN's Gregory Wallace

(CNN) – Were Ronald Reagan in office today, some Republicans would “start looking for a ‘real’ conservative to challenge him in a primary,” Arnold Schwarzenegger wrote in an op-ed published Saturday evening.

The former California governor said that the man who held that office 30 years before him – before becoming president - is becoming more a distant memory than a model to some Republicans on the “extreme right.” They are playing the role of “ideological enforcers” rather than seeking inclusion and solutions, wrote Schwarzenegger, himself a Republican.

“What's important is our shared belief in the broad Republican principles of free enterprise and small government,” he said in the op-ed published in the Los Angeles Times. “If we continue to fight one another without being willing to compromise, we will keep losing to big-government advocates.”

Schwarzenegger encouraged his party to embrace a “big tent” mentality rather than exclude Republicans who are willing to compromise and, like Reagan and others, occasionally “buck their party.”

“It is true that he worked to reduce the size of government and cut federal taxes, and he eliminated many regulations. But he also raised taxes when necessary. In 1983, he doubled the gas tax to pay for highway infrastructure improvements,” said Schwarzenegger, who like Reagan made his name in Hollywood before going into politics.

“By holding their fingers in their ears when those topics arise, these Republicans aren't just denying themselves a seat at the table; in a state such as California, they also deny a seat to every other Republican,” he continued.

As I recall, those "ideological enforcers" were far more strident and arrogant back in the Reagan era, so I'm not sure what Schwarzenegger is talking about. We used to call them "Ronnie Robots." They were far worse back then, but now, they seem a bit more subdued than they used to be. Decades of ideologically-based deregulation, outsourcing, globalism, and mindless greed have gutted the American economy. All of what we're experiencing now (economically) was predicted back during the Reagan era, but nobody wanted to listen. Yes, there was some economic boom during Reagan's tenure in office, but a few of us knew that it was just a temporary thing and that sooner or later, the day of reckoning would come.

The Republicans are merely relying on the same tactics which worked so well during the 1980s, and I recall Schwarzenegger was one of their cheerleaders back then, too. So, he's hardly one to talk about "ideological enforcers," since he was one of them. I remember when he proclaimed "Michael Dukakis is the real Terminator" to the resounding cheers of mindless devotees.

Yes Zonie, I remember that about Arnie too. But I tend to think he evolved a lot during his time as governor

Perhaps so, but he's trying to compare Republicans from then and now, and I don't see any difference. If anything, they were much worse back in the 1980s (the period he's extolling), since they were far more insufferably arrogant and puffed up due to Reagan's immense popularity.

I think he was talking more about the religious right and how far they have moved, including the teabaggers who are openly stating they will not work with the people who oppose their point of view. Reagan at least worked with both parties, to a point, whereas today's GOP seem to believe the only point of view that matters is their personal one, not even the POV of the people who elected them matters to them

Well of course if you go by your vivid imagination, that's true.

But it's really a LOT MORE ACCURATE to go by the congressional record. And that reflects more of a picture over the past 3 or so year of the neo-cons (primarilly claiming to be 'of the tea party') getting their way in tantrum situations. Enjoy it while it lasts.

The Republican power base in the 80s was based on being able to pull a lot of extremists under one tent. So he is not far off the mark on that.

And to stay relevant, I think the Republicans will have to start to understand better how to appeal to the moderate Republican.

But appealing to the moderate was never what 80s politics was about. Revisionist to say the least.

Arnie wouldn't know a real republican if he came up and kicked him in his metal groin. Let alone what's good for the GOP.

The GOP has had almost 11 years now of a "friggin' TAX break" and it hasnt created any of the jobs that was promised at that time. The "trickle down theory" in Regan's years even back then was called "voodoo economics" and that been proven to be the case since the wealthy have no incentive to actually let the wealth go anywhere but their own pockets.

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/CollegeAndFamily/Advice/GapBetweenRichPoorAmericansAccelerates.aspx

And in both cases the words RECESSION and unemployment (now called outsourcing) has followed Ragan & Bush...... but yet anyone else is wrong, and unAmerican for opposing them. yet when u point out such things then the excuse is everything else but the problems they started.. the only thing thats gone up in the GOP employment world is CEO salaries.

...Remember "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" ?? but yet they bitch cuz Obama actually KILLED the asshole they missed....

go figure...

agree! the root of our problems was sown starting with Ray-gun, or mr. starwars. we're finally hitting the critical mass of an unsustainable ever increasing national debt. they can't print their way out of this anymore.

i don't think they're any more or less strident, but that's another debate.

i think it's ironic that repubs always say the dems are tax and spend, but the reality is that the natl debt has always increased (exponentially) more with repubs as president. Obama is the only democrat exception (also going crazy with natl debt).

How could today's Radicals be any more fanatical than those in the 80s without dying of rabies?

Tell me something Mark, have you ever seen so much shit get run through Congress a with as little press as possible before this? I know the big shit gets a lot of attention, like when they want to put it off on Obama. But a lot of stuff is getting almost SNUCK through Congress.

And to think, there were idiots in the GOP that were making small noises to test the waters on amending the constitution so he could run for the rose garden.
You guys have a funny way of talking shit up and then ditching on it when it doesn't work out for ya. And the disowning of Arnold is a CLASSIC example.
