Sounds ok in theory but a number of those rights impinge on the rights of others, as you know.

e.g. could easily argue that numbers 2, 5, 7 and 8 are not clear cut (excluding the complex issue of abortion):

The right to be or work in a public place and not be subject to passive smoke
The right to not have your property stolen by someone desperate to feed their drugs habit
The right to move about in a city centre free from vomit, mini lakes of urine and threatening drunks
The right to be judged by society and not instantly by those carrying guns

To have aspirations for what you want your society to be you need to normalise people's rights in forming that society. People shouldn't be ignorant of how the things they do or would want to do affect others around them. The porn issue is far from clear cut either with some currently asking questions such as; how do you want young people to think of themselves, what do you want to be their influences growing up?

You've got a battle on your hands if you want to maintain the status quo for any of the things mentioned on that list. All kinds of groups are lobbying hard on issues such as how wearing pink socks encourages violence.

There's other legislation in place to discourage theft without need for a drugs ban, though.
(It's even conceivable that legalisation might drop the price of a few narcotics to the point where junkies won't need to nick your telly to afford a fix.)

I'm also puzzled that pools of vomit and aggressive drunks are the worst consequences of passive drinking you can think of. Having some pissartist who's so bladdered they think they can drive home okay run into the back of your own car is a bit more severe.

FullCircle -> RE: Libertarian rant for the day (5/12/2012 12:17:35 PM)

Yes other laws exist to make theft a less appealing option but those laws are reactive laws which address the crime that has occurred rather than trying to understand the whole background of what lead to it. I doubt legalisation of drugs would stop the black market trade in them as there is still with tobacco. Also there is a stigma attached to drugs which won't go away overnight meaning they'll never be easily available in the short term. The cheapest form of drugs will be the unregulated non taxed form.

You are right drink driving or driving while under the influence of drugs are among the worst consequences but those didn't spring to mind at the time of writing. Drink driving is easy to detect, not so easy to detect those under the influence of drugs. Once again better to look at the culture that leads to driving whilst under the influence rather than the individual criminal that commits the act.

I've always found it odd that we expect drunk people to make sensible choices.
